Are you talking about right above the glove box? I think mine ('79) has a speaker above the glove box and there are a bunch of little holes in the dash to let out air. Of course I'm not entirely sure that it is a speaker since I don't think I've ever heard it work, but that's what I have always thought it was.

well, they probably add speackers for the higher models, Gsl and SE. But they are not going to produce a different dash without holes, its not cost effective.
Ill have to check mine for these, Im sure there is no speaker, as I have a "S". But I plan to add component speakers in the front, and utiliziing the stock location would be nice.

I want someone to post here that they had thiers come with a speaker there.. cause that's always what I've thought as well.. but the other day I stuck my hand behind it and ... no speaker, and I've got a high model. I don't think they ever came with a speaker there, I think it's just a vent into the glove box??... I dunno

My 79 and 80 savanna's have the speaker or vent on the dash. Never looked to see if anything was behind it. I would say it's for a speaker by looking at it.

only series1 RX7's have that ugly thing, it's supposed to be a mono speaker seeing as how they didn't have much demand for stereo sound back in the day.

Let me rephrase that. American model cars only had them in '79-'80 on the GS models. I can not speak for other countries, I just noticed you are not in America. I had a very early '79 model that I redid the dash in and the metal piece had mounting holes for a 4 inch speaker. I just assumed that the J-spec cars had a speaker there and they did not put it on the American models. Kind of like the first savanna models that they put out for evaluation had the antenna mounted on the front fender rather than the back.

I've got an American '80 GS that I have replaced the dash on and the old dash does not have the speaker holes nor was there any mounting brackets to mount a speaker to.

Yea the Savannas had the windshield antenna, I said the early ones that they put out for evaluation by the reviewers/press had them on the front fender. I had always just assumed that they had the dash grill over there. I wonder why they went with the rear antenna over here?

Antenans Questions
Cause the inwindow one don't work for $h!t, over hear every sa I bought I ended up putting an aftermarket antenna on that was made by pioneer, most Jncats I knew didn't use their radios, only the cassette players. (and JN radio stations suck on the average) some are OK but they are rare. Americans on the other hand are used to listening to their radios a lot more, poor reception would immediately casue problems if sold in the states.
mind you this is my opinion and is not based on any thing other than what I have observed in 18 + years of living in japan.
