Okay, so I just finished reading up on webers and mikunis.....

I see they may produced unmatched power at high rpm. Like 60+hp over stock Nikki.

I see the cons with them being no full throttle or throttle problems below 3500rpm (where the Sterling I'm sure would have no problem here)

But, just how BIG of a problem do you have with the weber/ mikunis below 3500rpm? I mean, does the engine just die at full throttle or are we just talking a 1/2 sec lag here?????

My seven is definitely a street car but I've noticed going down the road 90% of the time you are running 3500rpm anyway.......

yes, do tell. I'm looking for the best "bang for the buck" upgrade for carburetation myself.
I don't want s/c or turbo that is for sure. Just a little extra power and torque, and yes, the look too.
so far, best deal I've seen is 500 bucks at Rotaryshack for the weber sytsem....
I've had two sidedraft set ups before. My first RX7 had a Mikuni set up on a 13B streetported 81. It ran like a scalded dog when tuned in right but it was very finnicky and required tuning when the weather changed seasons or humidity levels rose. I also had an older Weber 45 on my current 85GSL. It suffered from an irksome stumble at cruising speeds that I was unable to tune out. Also- lack of choke and no cruise control either.

I've opted to try the Sterling carb for sake of simplicity and apparent ease of tuning. Plus- it is a stock set-up. All linkages work fine, cruise, choke etc..No modding. It may not have the bling*bling thing, but I personally don't mind- I've had two sidedrafts before and I don't feel they are worth the hassle for a near stock car.

thanks for the info Tom. Good things to consider. Ecspecially the choking thing. Very important in a rotary.....

So far I have not found reference to others having the oil leakage you mentioned. The SU model type HIF6 used on RX-7's is a more advanced design than the older models. Perhaps it was other models that leaked. I was starting with completely new carbs and Eamon re-worked them changing the needles, etc. Choice of oil has always been debated. Thicker oil will slow down the reaction of the piston so more fuel will be added under acceleration. Thinner oil may not dampen the piston sufficiently. I think SU's can make as much power as any carb except possibly Webers. SU's have better fuel economy and driveability, and for street driving I never had to change needles even at extreme temperature and altitude variations.

Thats good to know thanks. Yes , the friends I mentioned are old school hot rodders/racers. So they had older SU's I'm sure.

Once we get the manifold port design correct, ours.

Remember...the 12a stockport can only ingest 344 cfm @ 8500 rpm @ 100% VE.

All the choices will outflow the stockport 12a.

You can't correct high-end problems with a Holley because you can't replace airbleeds.

You can correct low-end problems with a Weber because even though you can change air bleeds, you can't EVER get the velocity needed low in the rpms.
That's just venturi science. No jetting will cure that.
(Read "Venturi Design" on my site.)

You can tune the Sterling carb to deliver the same ***-kicking high end as any Weber, and still have power down low.
You're only limited by what the engine characteristics are.

Yeah, I'm biased.
Right now the Sterling Carb is a tremendous kick in the pants.
I believe that it will really prove itself when we get the manifolds out there.

Any ETA's on the manifold designs? I've got a spare one in my garage that would go nicely with a Sterling Carb (hint..hint hint ).

I have a Mikuni sidedraft on my car, and flooring it under 3k doesn't kill the engine, but it's almost like turbo lag, it will accelerate slowly until it passes 3.5k then it whips you back in the seat. I'm really tempted to try a sterling carb and see how it compares to the Mikuni and the stock Nikki.

I dunno. Carl keeps draggin his ***.
Friggin guy never does anything.

It'll be a few weeks. He's busy pressure testing Sterling Carbs for boost prepping them, and shoe-horning prepping his own race car...

-It's tough doing this when you have a whole other life.
We're just part-timers.
(...so far. )
