Whats NOT needed?

Okay, there's alot of threads about swapping 13b's into a 12a equipped car but nothing really about what is/isn't needed.

So I'm asking that, what isn't needed on an S4 13b when swapping it into an FB?

Thanks,
Eric

If your planning on running the stock S4 EFI,then youll need just about everything.Basically,if it plugs into the engine harness, you need it.

Which isnt to say there arent a few things you can do without. There are a few smog related components that arent neccesary for proper engine operation. But the majority of the underhood "mess" is required......AFM,MAP,coils,injector resistor(86-87.5),baro sensor, knock relay, and all the other junk on the engine. All provide neccesary input signals to the ECU.

If you run a standalone, then you need almost none of the factory rats nest and wiring.Basically just the engine block, manifolds and the usual mount up pieces needed for any FC engine swap....(GSL-SE oilpan,GSL-SE front cover,GSL-SE right motor mount/or grind-slot the front plate)

You mean belt driven?

If so,then you dont need anything.
Sure, the alt and waterpump have to stay, but if you dont have P/S or A/C then pitch em.

The smog pump can go too,if you dont need to meet smog regs, but if you delete it,then it kinda sets off a chain reaction of removals since the pump,ACV and lots of other little things make up the whole secondary air injection system.Youll have to know and understand which solenoids and switches do what, and what ports/nipples you have to plug or block off, in order to not **** off the ECU.Youll also want to remove the cats if you delete the smog pump.If you pull the wrong stuff, the EFI can be affected.

Basically, thats the entirety of the smog gear. The air injection and cats make up 99% of the smog gear on a rotary. And its kinda an "all or nothing" type of system. It wont hurt performance to keep it,but youll have a simpler engine and bay if you do remove it all.I retain all my smog gear,I pass CA emissions standards, and I make 300HP with my current S5 setup.

I never really thought about all this until yesterday when my neighbor offered me the entire drivetrain out of an 86-87 for pretty much free. Thats the reason I asked this so I can remove all that isn't needed while the engine is out of the car.

Is there any chance that I can get some pics of an FB with a stock S4 swapped into it?

You may ask why, because I picked up another 81 w/o the engine and as stated above the S4 stuff is completely free, so I just want to get it running before anything.

If you mean an N/A S4 engine, not a lot of people do them.Mainly because its exactly the same amount/type of work to swap in a S4 TII engine, which is of course more desireable and more powerful. Not that there is anything wrong with them, the N/A engines are very reliable and have good torque, but why go with 140HP when you can have 200HP for the same amount of work,ya know?

A picture of a S4 engine in an FB isnt going to look any different than a picture of a S4 engine mounted in an FC.The physical motor mounts arent really gonna be visible, and all the manifolds and mess on top of the engine is gonna be exactly the same as it is on the FC.The FC engines arent any bigger, longer, heavier or complicated(for the most part) than the GSL-SE 13B that was factory availible in the 84-85 FB's.

The hardest part to a S4 swap is getting the fuel system converted over to safely run at higher EFI fuel pressures and wiring up the left side harness to the engine and accesories.A search for TII swap info will answer almost all your questions.Like I said,an N/A S4 swap is EXACLTY the same as a TII S4....except you wont have to plumb up the turbo,or have to worry about a new exhaust system. In the areas that matter(wiring, fuel delivery,mounting,dimensions,ect...) its identical.....

If you are just looking for some general pics of a 2nd gen engine in a 1st gen chassis, heres some of mine. Its a 90 S5 TII engine with all the factory gear, mounted in my 84 GS chassis....

Yeah, I was mainly looking for pics of where the ignition stuff was mounted. I just noticed the manifold is backwards.

the main reason I'm doing this is, like i said, it's free. I'll worry about the turbo stuff when I rebuild the engine, just at the get it going ASAP because the neighbor where its stashed is moving, point. and did I mention the free thing?

So is it a turbo engine or N/A?
Im still not sure exactly what engine your reffering to getting.

Yea,free is sweet.I got this engine for free too, just had to pull it out for the guy.....granted,it was blown to hell along with the turbo, but Mazdatrix and I took care of that.

OK just wondering.

There should be no issues with swapping it in,just do some reaserch here and get an FSM for the 86-87 year FC.That will lay out all the wiring and smog control gear so youll get a better idea of whats what.
The S4 is very similar to the GSL-SE engine,so mechanically its not hard to convert.Like I mentioned, the two main hurdles are the fuel system and left side wiring.
Just be sure you get EVERYTHING under the hood, the ECU under the pass. floorboard, the entire right side harness and all the gang plugs for the ECU and left side equipment plugs under the hood.If the guy wont let you chop and dice his car's wiring harness on the left side, youll have to hit a wrecking yard and do some snipping.Itd also be a good idea to grab the FC's fuel tank/pump while your in there. Its a fairly easy conversion to make that pump fit in an FB tank, and it will solve 90% of the fuel delivery issues.

Thanks for the compliment,Chedda...it was a very long, expensive project I started almost 10 years ago.Shes a daily driver with 250K miles and even took best 1st gen last year at Sevenstock....my first official car show attempt.
