I don't know which version it was...240, 260, 280...but I raced one a few months after I bought my '79. I had him through the 1st 2 gears, but I missed 3rd because I have a 4 speed and there is no block-off plate to keep me from throwing it into the hole that should be 5th....damn!

"He is somehow confused (probably by breathing the massive anounts of smoke it produces) and thinks he can "burn" any first gen Z."
ouch, thats a burn

I read somewhere, I think it was Road and Track or Car and Driver, that the '79 Rx-7 was faster than the '79 Z, but the '78 Z was faster than the '79 7. So I guess it depends on the year.

Well, speaking as a long time Z man recently converted to RX7s, I would have to say that as long as it is a Z rather than a ZX you will have a good run on your hands. The old Zs don't handle as well as the 7s, but they do have the power and the straight six that comes in it is a very smooth boinger (redline 7k).
The last Z I had was a '72 240 w/dual Webers. My roommate's Chevelle w/350 could not keep up at any speed. Plenty of potential for these cars. Anyway, just my 2 cents....
