I never lost to a 280Z, back in my younger days, with a 12A with exhaust. With my 13Bs, even the Turbo 280's got spanked.

You gotta drive it like you stole it.

I don't know which version it was...240, 260, 280...but I raced one a few months after I bought my '79. I had him through the 1st 2 gears, but I missed 3rd because I have a 4 speed and there is no block-off plate to keep me from throwing it into the hole that should be 5th....damn!

According to my Mazda history book, the RX7 killed the 240. They used the phrase "blew the doors off..."

Actually, now that I think about it (it was a looonnngggg time ago) a friend of mine had a 240 with dual Webers, and I beat him too. And I was, and still am, completely stock.

"He is somehow confused (probably by breathing the massive anounts of smoke it produces) and thinks he can "burn" any first gen Z."

Wow! You're a young buck aren't you? I see from your profile that you're 15. Have fun with your car, but do the right things to it...showy things are great, but things that work are better. Good luck!

I read somewhere, I think it was Road and Track or Car and Driver, that the '79 Rx-7 was faster than the '79 Z, but the '78 Z was faster than the '79 7. So I guess it depends on the year.

Sigh.

Since when was the 1st gen RX-7 about straight line speed? At best the 1st gen RX was as fast as the competition. Most times it was slower.

Well, speaking as a long time Z man recently converted to RX7s, I would have to say that as long as it is a Z rather than a ZX you will have a good run on your hands. The old Zs don't handle as well as the 7s, but they do have the power and the straight six that comes in it is a very smooth boinger (redline 7k).

The last Z I had was a '72 240 w/dual Webers. My roommate's Chevelle w/350 could not keep up at any speed. Plenty of potential for these cars. Anyway, just my 2 cents....
