What is a twin dizzy?

Is a 12a twin dizzy rotary the same as a normal 12a except the distributors? I did a search, not much on topic. Whats the pros and cons of twin dizzy compared to a normal 12a.whats the horsepower of a twin dizzy? Trying to figure out what it is. Thanks

Twin dizzy engines were made pre 1974 and came with shitty 6mm carbon apex seals.

I'd drop one in a 1st gen just to say I've got a "twin dizzy motor."

Actually have a pair of twin-dizzy front covers kicking around. I'm half pondering doing weird butchery to a pair of late-model dizzys to make them work, for the sheer weirdness.

I've always wanted to do that. It would be easy to modify one dizzy for direct fire on the trailing.

I think that describes just about any early rotary engine. There were lots of kinks to work out because it was so new.

Ok, so now we have

its got two distributors
there somewhat not reliable
......hmmm

Is there any Horsepower numbers and or, can you rebuild it like a normal 12a and keep the twin dizzys? Can you replace that 6mm seal with something else more reliable, is there anything you can do to the engine. What is the benefit of two distributors..more spark , one dist. to 2 plugs. This twin dizzy stuff in interesting. Also, being that theres not much on the subject of twin dizzy's, any info anyone can throw in will make this post a must for when anyone else in the future searches (twin dizzy)

Thanks guys

Pointless (pun intended) going back to breaker point ignition like the twin dist. engines had.Mazda must have just been lazy all those years making twin distributors instead of just putting it all into one package.Seems unlikely it took 6-7 years for someone to think up a single dist. system.......

mazda prolly just hadn't figured out how to make the rotor that would work the way they needed to yet. Either way i'm sure it had 2 coils so i can't see any benefits in power.

cool site about history of our beloved 12a

The B7EM plugs have a very small gap. I have a '73 12A that has a '74 single dizzy front cover. I'm going to try some later spark plugs in it that were designed for electronic ignition. FC in leading and FB in trailing so the plugs match the ignition system.
