What are Sumitoma HTR 200 175/50/13's good for?

These came with an 84 GSL I recently bought, the guy said they are good for "drifting". They aren't bad on the highway, but for my long daily commute I'd kind of like to keep all four sneakers on the road, plus I don't like getting in and out of the car because it's too low and also it's hard on the muffler, which keeps scraping on stuff.

Are they good for anything? They have less than 2000 miles on them and I don't need the rims, should I put them up on ebay?

Well, if they were a decent size they would be great tires for everything except snow, I used 205/60-13's on my daily driver for years and years (except winter, had snow tires for that) and they work great. That size you have there isn't worth much, way too narrow and short, looks goofy too imo. I guess they would be good for drifting I don't know, they have great grip...

Wheels I would save... good stock wheels are becoming hard to find... unless your planning to totally change to like a ford 9 inch or tub the car...something crazy... I would just dismount the tires and stack the wheels somwhere... prob will not get too much for them on ebay...

They might be good for drifting in the way that even a stock 12A could spin those for days.

I run those same tires they are good all-round for me. No snow here in TX.

But they look goofy with the size, doesnt fill in the wheel well. Id put them up for sale here on the fourm or ebay.

Yeah I see some of the guys autocrossing with the same brand tires but a bigger size. I plan on investing in a set for autocrossing my self. I plan on going with a 205/60/ R13 though. If you was closer to me I would by them from you. I cannot fit shipping in my race/hobby budget at the moment.

Thanks for the feedback guys, especially MattG, who actually has experience with these tires. I did some poking around on the net and they are very highly rated tires, H speed rating (130 mph) and AA traction (the best) and for such a small tire they are not exactly cheap.

And despite their small size they handled just fine out on the highway at 80 mph+. Still I don't like the way they look, but maybe other folks think small low profile tires are cool.

I've got plenty of rims so I'll probably just sell them mounted or maybe put them on the tan 84 GSL that I'm planning to sell in the spring.

If anyone has a particular interest in these little guys I can probably make a pretty good deal, especially if shipping isn't involved.

That's right 82 transam, if you want to be your parent's favorite, tell them only good news.

But seriously, you are right, they are too damn small. I'm part of an older generation and I love the stock 7 style, in my opinion there hasn't been a better looking car before or since to rivale it. These small tires make me cringe, kind of like that 1st gen with the lexus front end attached that I saw on this forum last week. Yech. But these tires would look great on that car, and it does lower it a couple inches without any suspension changes.

So I was thinking some of you younger folk might educate me on how undersized tires are the bomb, like pierced eye lids and bald heads, and that they are actually worth the money the college kid who sold them to me paid for them a few months ago.

Or maybe he didn't pay for them???

Thanks for the feedback and don't worry 82, I love you too.

hahahahahahahaah you guys crack me up, I had a good laugh for a few minutes b/c of you two. Anyway, I guess at 22 I'm one of the "younger folks" you speak of and I have no idea why any of the things you listed are cool, then again I was never really that cool to being with. Cool to me is the 13bt first gen I'm building, not small *** tires.
Seriously I'm still chuckling about that comment Matt....

Well I cant educate you on those things except bald head, becuase im going bald and im only 19 which suxors! So being bald had better be cool! Never had the eyelid pierced, but I did have the eyebrow, until I had to take it out for work. I thought it looked good, and wasnt too flashy

I run 205/65/R14 on my LE, and it fils up the wheel well nice, Also im running a bigger rim so that helps also.

I had to walk out in the ice storm we are having to get those pics too! lol

Hey Matt, that eyebrow piercing looks good, so do the 205/65/R14's. Could I interest you in a real nice set of Sumitoma 175/50/13's?

band-aid tires cool f*** that im 18 and thats just stupid.
i like having a descent sidewall not too big and not too small just right fot the size of rims u run. as for small tires being good for drifting , these cars dont even drift well stock they love railing corners i hate people that automatically assume that because i have an rx7 its a drift car

Man you sound like an ignorant ***!!!
I hav my 7 set up for "railing corners" (aka track days and auto-x), but a little drift is FUN!! Especially considering the inharent difficulties of drifting an FB....
If you can overcome the shortfalls to the FB in a drifting type of driving, you and master the freaking car!!!
The short sidewall tires make for MUCH easier spining, and less sidewall flex...
Not everyone thinks like you, if you care to succede anywhere in you future, you better figure this out!!

Matt they'd look great on your pinto, let's talk. But I'm post whoring, it looks like 85 has an important issue with undersized tires, but I'm still trying to figure it out. Something about "railing corners" and "sidewall flex", sounds like there might be something to these midget tires afterall. Are they really all that much fun for anything?

Jack, yes i am still running the stock suspension set up as far as I know. I know It had the struts and shocks replaced awhile back when my father owned it, but I do not know with what. The suspension is next on my list of upgrades, I just got finished with the fuel system. So my bank account needs to recover from that first.

Ray I will send you a PM and we can discuss it futher, instead of letting people on the fourm know our biz lol.

I was kidding Matt, I think they would look terrible on your Pinto (if you really have one) but hey, it's your car, send me a PM. You would get a break on shipping, these dinky tires are the lightest ones made for 13 inch rims.

Maybe that's what Sumitoma HTR 200 175/50/13's are good for: Pintos!

Well you may have, but I was for real.

I think they may be to small and leave a big wheel well gap which I dont want. Let me go take a look, and a few pics for proof! lol

Your right ray! They will look Horrible on my pinto. Im running 165/70/r13 on there now, and I dont like the way those look. I couldnt picture even smaller sidewall.

Dont mind the rust you see above the wheel that is from the battery box, and when I bought It the car had sat for so long that the battery ate away at itself and leaked acid. I havent had a chance to roll and weld in new sheet metal, but that is the only rust on the car. Its a great little car, its got the stock 2.3L in there now, but soon it will have a 302.

If I find a use for them I will for sure let you know.

-Matt

Nice looking Pinto, you had me thinking the little Sumitoma's might look good on one of those early, boxy style Pintos, setting low to the ground ghetto-style. But you are right, even the Pinto wheel wells make them look like the weekly special at Duncan Donuts.

So they are not good for RX-7s, or cars in general, but maybe they'd be good for a high-performance go cart?

I'm getting the impression they aren't good for much!
