What is this strut?
Im sorry I cant post any picture's, but I will do my best to identify it. It is black and has KYB stamped into the side. That is the only identifying marks on it. It looks like it has an adjustable star like thing where the moving rod, and the rest of the strut meet in the center. These are on my 84 GS. Any Idea's?
probably the same units that came on the GTX here in japan, they were a factory option for all other domestic models, but came stock on the GTX, and the SE over here. they are a KYB adjustable shock that oil damped, very easy to rebuild, and modify if you want. simply swapping out the stock 12 weight shock oil for 20 weight shock oil will make it a lot stiffer, but you risk blowing out the seals (But like I said they are easy to rebuild so who cares).

I picked up a set of Koni Red Adjustable's from classic car garrage for $100. They appear to be about 10 years old, if not older and are going to be rebuilt before they ever touch my car. Are these a better shock's, or should I stick with the KYB's? And where can I get the rebuild kit, and the spanner wrench for the KYB's?

Koni's won't blow out as easy as the Kayabas (KYB) but you will have to pay to get them rebuilt when they do....The KYB's are very easy to overhaul, and mod but you will probably have to make your own wrench at this point.

There is no kit sold anymore, you will have to do what I did last time, go down to your closest hardware/industrial supply to get the Orings, other than that its a matter of cleaning them properly and getting new top seals (wipers) made. Almost any hydraulic shop can get top seals for you they are simply a seal that keeps the dirt and contaminents out.
My advice, get the koni's and use them then when you have time pull the kayabas apart and learn how they work and how to rebuild them, as they are infinitly adjustable when you open them up, (the plunger rod is adjustable) and this along with changeing the amount (volume) of oil + viscosity (weight) will allow you to custom tune them however you want.
