what should i do?

ok this is the skinny....i had an 81 when i was 18 and loved it to death. when someone wrecked it when i was working one night I lost complete hope on doing it again. Now it's almost 10 years later and I have a window of opportunity. the lady next door has an 85 in pretty good shape. it has a small dent on the driver side and she says that the gas tank has rust in it from not having a gas cap for the past 6 months. her "mechanic" told her that the rust is all over the place in her gas tank and her carb. and that she should get rid of the car for 500 to 800 bucks. I told her that I'll give her 350 for it, and she said that she's going to give it till the weekend and if no-body offers her more that she'll sell it to me. Should i offer her more? or is this a bad buy? or should i wait? what should i do?

well if it is in nice shape and you want to have fun with it, 350 sounds good. you can get all the parts you'll need at a decent price and its all pretty easy stuff. go for it man, theres even a few guys in miami who can tell you where to get parts locally

yeah, that sounds like a pretty good deal. if the tank has a lot of rust in it count on having to rebuild and clean the whole fuel system though. (new fuel pump and rebuilding the carb). Its a 12a right? I had to do that with my 85 when i got it because the tank was full of flaked off rust. But it wasnt that difficult.
Good luck with the car.

You probably don't need a new tank.

Gas Tank Infomartion

Check out this site, it tells you how to clean out your
Fuel system.

If you carb is screwed, I have somebody who can get it rebuilt relatively quick and inexpensive.

yeah, stupid people who leave the gas cap off their car should be relieved of their car ASAP!!! Don't offer more money to someone that stupid, especially when you have to do a bunch of work just to get it to work.

don't call an old lady stupid..... I think 350 sounds good for that deal.... Try to get a weber side draft and go stainless steel on all your fuel lines... a new pump and filter for sure... and if you got the money... just buy a new fuel tank...

don't call an old lady stupid.....
He never said the lady was old, he just said the lady next door. You must admit that you have to be pretty dumb to drive around without a gas cap.

The only thing worse is using a rag for a gas cap.

update! - I couldn't resist and went to the lady's house last night and found out a bunch of great information. the lady had taken the car to a mechanic that collects old rx-7's and he's the one that suggested to her that she should sell it for 500-800 bucks. so it's him that she was waiting for to let me know if she was going to sell it to me. turns out the guy is on vacation until next week, I told her to just sell it to me for 500 and she did. so it's mine now!!! hahaha. and the car is "pristine" it has absolutely no rust or dents, it's bone stock - and i mean STOCK - nothing has been done to this car but be maintained. it even has the rear defogger intact. even the interior is completely well kept - no tears or scratches on the dash, nothing! i'm gonna get some pics. right now it jumps when idling, supposedly because of the "rust in the fuel system". i'd appreciate some feedback and suggestions on weather to restore this puppy or get it to perform like my old one. Thanks!...
