What new parts are really needed for 85SE rear wheel bearings?

What new parts are really needed for 85SE rear wheel bearings?

Mazdatrix shows spacers, collars bearings and seals, but parts distributors around here only list bearings and seals. Does that mean that the old collars and spacers are re-used?

RockAuto lists all the stuff. I just ordered everything and am going to replace it all so I only have to tear it all apart once.

The spacer can be reused if not damaged. Most end up cutting the bearings off the axles and it is difficult to get them off without hurting the spacer.

You will want new bearings and collars for pressing on. The collar helps retain the bearing and you really do not want to worry about reusing the old $2 parts.

Some bearings are sold with the retainers so they do not list them separate.

Its also a good time to modify the backing plates while they are off. Cut a slot in them between 2 of the 3 mounting holes about 1 1/8" wide. This will allow the plates to be added and removed later without removing the bearings. DO NOT do this to the triangle, 3 bolt, axle retainer plates. Nor to a drum brake backing plate.

I wasn't trying to be cheap (for a change!) it's just that I scheduled the mechanic to do it wednesday and I was worried about shipping time. I'll call Mazdatrix monday morning and see if they can ship it overnight so I get stuff tuesday. The Local dealer doesn't show spacers and collars.

Mazdatrix does not offer the bearing by it's self, it comes with the collar and that is how the dealer offers it.

84-85 Bearing with collar 26-1510-8595-MV
84-85 bearing spacer 26-1550-FA66
I have never needed to order the spacer. Even when shops have had to gring the collar off.

Mazdatrix buys their OEM parts from Mazda, they just turn the numbers around.

Bearing with collar number from dealer should be 8595-26-1510MV or some variation of that.

Spacer should be FA66-26-1550

Ah, good to know. Knowledge is power. One of the guys (borinquen7) has a complete set of the parts that he ended up with, so if we can ship them overnight I'll get those.

Meanwhile I'm trying to figure out what's bent that throws the caliper 2mm offline. I'm guessing that the flange the caliper is mounted to is bent rather than the axle housing or the small diameter flange fixed to the housing, which probably carries the bearing also and is a tough forging. Unlikely to bend. So I have to dig up a caliper flange, or straighten the old one (which probably isn't too bad). Though I have no idea who would have a replacement caliper mounting flange.

Can you post up pictures tomorrow of where it was hit underneath?

I have to take off my right rear tire to inspect a rotational noise. I will look at the caliper mounting and see if I can tell what would be the most likely suspect of your alignment problem.

I'll try to, but my left knee is killing me and that makes it hard to get down and fuss with this thing. Anyway, it's hard to see anything in the cramped quarters and I don't know how well the little digital camera will work in such a short focal length.

Basically, one end of the caliper body was dragging on the rotor face and scored it. I corrected the alignment by putting 2 flat washers as shims on the top securing screw between the mounting flange and the caliper threaded screw hole to move the caliper slightly away from the car centerline toward the outside of the car.

I couldn't see any marks of damage, but visibility is limited there.

also, dont forget when you are replacing the rear bearings, it may be a good time to replace the seal on each end as well. replacing this seal will ensure you have no loss of that GL-5 to your brakes and to the ground.

Turns out that collars don't come with the bearings, they're a separate item, and they aren't listed, so you gotta drag them outta the local warehouse. Good thing my local NAPA guy is an oldtimer who knew how to ferret them out (he imself has a gorgeous El Camino he bought new eons ago and restored, including the original Italian Blue Metallic finish, which is the best deep blue metallic I've ever seen). But I ended up with the bearings, seals and collars (re-used the spacers). Good thing I finally found the collars because they had to cut off the old ones. Also, the FSM advises to always replace collars, and even replace them again if they don't have a sufficient interference fit.

But the bearing mount in the axle housing got ovalled and maybe cocked by the bump, so I may have to replace the housing. We are buttoning it back up to see if it leaks and to check for any damage to the diff gears from the fluid loss.
