what is with my fuel gauge

My fuel gauge used to work but now it goes on and off. Also my fuel warning light does not work anymore. Could it be that my float in the gas tank is getting stuck? Why will it work sometimes then it will stop working?

Also my oil pressure gauge sometimes goes out but not as frequent as my gas gauge. Could I have a loose connection?

The first place I'd check for the fuel gauge is the connector on the gas tank, they corrode pretty easy and sometimes even fall off. It's behind the drivers side wheel well, you have to take off the plastic cover to get to it.

Good luck

Lightbulb same symtoms

My 85 had the same symptoms until it just read full tank all the time. I just checked the connector at the sender unit on top of the tank over the weekend (after running out of gas) , one of the metal tabs on the sender unit was completely corroded through (green dust) and had disentigrated to nothing. Time for a new sender unit
I'd check there, maybe the contacts can be cleaned if you catch it soon enough.

I tried cleaning the connections (they were not that corroded) but it still does not work. Infact now it never goes on, and I have no idea how much gas I have in the car. Any more suggestions?

How corroded were the connectors? Are you sure the connectors are making in the plug. Since now it's totally dead, think I'd double check that connection, douse it in WD40 and get a wire brush, toothpick, or whatever you can find and clean it out as good as you can. Let us know how it turns out.

No I was wrong it started working again but only on and off, I think I might try to make sure the connections are good once again. Also the warning light (that tells you that there is only 8 litres left is also not working) does it also work by the sender? The sender has three wires going to it right?

I looked again today and the piece of metal of the sender attached to the top wire (that is black and blue) was broken. So I attached it and the gauge seems to be working better now but when I accelerate it goes down to empty and then when I stop it slowly goes up. And it always does this. Could this be happening because I don't have too much gas in the car and it is swishing around? Does this happen to other people? (85 GS)

Sending unit is simply a ground sensor. One wire is the ground source, the second wire reads the variable resister reading that is affected by the float (fuel quantity sensor). The third wire reads a fixed sensor mounted to a rod that holds it near the bottom of your tank(low fuel sensor).

If neither is working and your tab connections are good, then the wire providing the ground source signal isn't working. So, the wire you found that is loose is probably the culprit.

Try and solder it back to its respective connector. That should fix it.
