What mods available for an 85 GS?
I am currently picked up a 85 GS to do Autocrossing and Drifting because down where I am there are a few tracks opened up that allow us to do it safely and we have competitions for prizes. So I figured it would be something fun to do since all my friends are already into it. I just couldnt bring myself to drifting my restored 88 10th AE. So I got a nice little 85 GS but the only problem is the solid axel makes getting a clutch LSD very hard.
What type of mods have people done to it to make it driftable? I know on the 240sx they weild the diffs, but their rear isnt a solid rear. I know I can swap GSL-SE Parts and then it would be ok. But was kinda hoping for an easier or better alternative. There has to be a few tricks out there that people use. Also can the stock carb handle drifting without dieing? I was worried about sloshing the fuel around causing it to kill.
Thanks for the info and hopefully I will love this car as much as my 88 .

welding the rear diff is possible on any car, just not recommended. The GSL-se rear-end is the prefered route. I understand fuel slosh is more of a problem on the earlier FB's but don't quote me on that.

GSL swap. If you go -SE you will have to get new rims because of the different bolt pattern. I really don't think that you will need a LSD. Do a full tuneup and Get yourself:
1) full exhaust, header back
2) get rid of the rats nest
3) get an e-fan
4) get a different carb (sterling, Holley, weber, dell, etc) and tune for it
5) better coils
6) better wires
7) light flywheel
8) search for timing mods and set your timing for that
Doing those should give you a pretty well rounded vehicle. These motors don't have enough torque to really spin the inside tire mid-corner. Learn how to clutch kick if you want to drift, and an open diff will work just fine until you learn how to do the basic techniques, then upgrade to a LSD

For a stock engine Mikuni carbs rock....2GCDFIS is a huge benefit, RB exhaust a must (SDJ is awesome but $$$)
As for mods, how deep is your wallet, because anything is possible, from small block kits through to bodykits and more. Check out Respeed for some great specialized parts and www.racersareme.com for affordable coilovers with camber plates.

I have a Sterling carb and it performs great. No "sloshing" issues at all. Check out my sig for suggested mods and let me know if you have any questions...

The car I have now runs great and would like to keep it how it is since I am begining. If the carb can handle drifting without dying out, then this setup will be fine. It has emissions removed, and I have a ford tarus fan to put in. The only problem it has is a leaking OMP which is pretty common on the FCs. It doesnt look like any lines are broken though, personally I am trying to find a block off plate for it so I can just run premix. Does anyone know where I can get the OMP block off plate for an 85, as well as a duel alt pully since the air pump is gone?
Thanks

you know, a N/A FC differential (Diff ONLY, not ring and pinion gears) or Miata differential will bolt into the FB's axle...
