what is the lay of the land with rack and pinion conversions in 2019?

What are the popular options for a rack and pinion swap in a fb in 2019?

I'm familiar with what was happening in the 2000's. I remember the cp racing kit. I've seen some people successfully pull off a fc subframe swap. I read stories about using a Volkswagen rack but flipped. Nothing really ever came out that people could buy.

This is 2019. What are the popular options? Did anybody ever sell a readily available conversion kit? This thread may help out future searches as well.

I would love a bolt-in R&P kit for my '85, but I think the "lay of the land" is that there just aren't enough buyers for anyone to spend the time and money making a good kit. Blacktie has one, but I had difficulty getting info out of them and others questioned it's quality.

That thread has a ton of good information going on in it right now. There's also tons of other threads containing almost identical information.

Black Tie offers a bolt-in kit currently, which can be purchased for an FB and give you a R&P kit.
Otherwise you can always go with an FC front subframe, but be prepared to fight some steering geometry problems if you want it to perform as well as the FB system does stock.
There are no other current ways of doing it besides some one-off rack conversions. Eric Crear is a local guy to me who used a Sonic R&P that he retrofitted to his FB by doing a one-off design for example. Otherwise those VW or Fox Body conversions are rumors that you can find as well.

My current plan is to take the car to a local chassis builder once I'm done all my suspension and drivetrain mods, and see what they can do with the Many aftermarket R&P kits. They do R&P conversions to hot rods and muscle cars, and custom race chassis all the time. I'm sure they can build me a behind-axle R&P that will keep the correct Ackerman with the stock steering arms. How much it costs, has yet to be seen, but I'll already have invested about 10× the book value of the car, so, what's a little more.

That sounds like a solid plan, will be interesting to see what they come up with! Keep us updated, I'd like to see what you find out.

Yeah, RX7's are not an investment piece. They are a rocky love affair.
