What is this inspection plate for?

Drivers side, top rear of motor by the oil filter. I originally though that was for setting TDC, but I was wrong. (maybe)?

Oddly enough, when I tried to use that to do so, I aligned the larger section of the weight on the flywheel to it and it just so happened that i got it to line up?! but i also have thought that my was on wrong, or maybe is now lol.

I just went down and tinkered for a minute since I don't know how the hell I'm going to be able to pull the side access panel off to set TDC. I think I'll just use the top access hole to see the counter balance so i can get it in the general vicinity.

actually its a left over spot for the top mount starter they used in the early 70's. mazda is nice and they usually leave things backwards compatible, at least for a while.

OH SNAP YOU ARE A GENIUS.

A top mount starter would look pretty nifty.

the only reason I'm still goofing with my timing is because for a while when I was messing with it I could do a cold start and it would idle on it's own without me depressing the gas or anything. I miss that. made warming it up much quieter - I like my neighbor below me and the parking garage at work gets deathly loud when I warm it up.

maybe i need to tune the carb some, that could be the cause of it not doing that now too if my timing is correct. oh well. I need to stop tinkering with things and just drive the car.

You must have been bord or something lol...Yeah that inspection plate on top of the motor on the driver side is for the old school starter setup's as already mentioned...Your not missing anything not using a top mount starter, those ******* starters are HUGE LOL...

For the timming, For now lets do this sthit in baby steps...lol..

My guess your not too far off by maybe a degree or so, seeing how the car starts up fine right now... But just get a timming light check and see if its on point, and adjust from there...Don't go start yanking dizzy's off and ****...lol...Seems you like you get bord easy, and want to go inspect stuff....Its all good though its how we learn...

Your fine

I have it timed with a timing light right now - it's spot on the marks. actually, it's about 5 degrees before the leading mark, was doing a test. I may put the second gen ignition set up back in it today, Lol. I mostly want to set TDC so I know how.

I have a problem with having to know how everything works and learning how to do it, lol.
