That is the adjustment for your TPS sensor. You adjust this of your idle is bouncing up and down. There is a sensor that you need to buy to properly adjust this. Call mazda trix to purchase one.

that is the variable resister you shouldnt have to mess with that AT ALL! you only adjust that as the the last thing to adjust. your TPS (throttle postion sensor) is on your intake manifold and it have 3 wires going to it. if your going to adjust your tps you need find a green 3 plug under the hood on the engine wiring harness and here is a link to make your own tester

There are threads that can be found in the FAQ section concerning the idle problem associated with the SE.

Recommend you read it and follow the procedure. Failure to do so or start tampering with things that you are not familiar with on the SE will only result in compounding the issue. :-)

I swear by the nellup link that 3rd and Final posted. Its a nice step by step and explains what each adjustment does. All you need for those adjustments is the 2 LED rig (also posted above) and a screwdriver. Vac leaks will screw you too...

the gsl-se has like 6 vacuum lines, thats not the problem.... only 2 lines that break, are by the acv when you try to mess with them.

find a shop manual, and follow the tune up procedure, its clear and simple, and its the first place to start.

6 vacc lines?! Having just redone the vac lines in my SE I can tell you there are a hell of a lot more than 6 once you pull off the UIM/D.C. Here is a nice colored diagram of the SE vac routes that helped me a ton. I think I used ~40 feet of good silicone tubing on my car.

Edit - I guess if you count each vaccum circuit as a line there look to be 8 in the diagram I posted. But that 8 circuits is like 40 freaking pieces of hose!

scott, the variable resistor helps to finely adjust the idle by adjusting the mixture. do not adjust it if you do not need to.

Another inherent problem is that the linkage may bind on the throttle body or the throttle plates become gummed up also causing binding.

This causes the throttle not to seat to the correct position each time therefore causing a different position on the TPS to be read by the ECU that will cause idle issues.

Also, remove that screw on top completely and clean out the orifice. Clean it really well, they become corroded over the years. Then replace the oring on the screw and put it back in and see if that helps with the idle adjustment.
