What gauges do i need??

i am wondering what gauges are nessary and important for my car i am going to prob install some new gauges b/c i am swaping a new 12at and it seems just as hard to put a new set of gauges in with the standalone then to just try and make the old stuff work. i know i will need a tach, spedo, boost, and fuel level. what else should i stuff into the car? and where should i put them tach and speedometer go in the org location obviously but give me some ideas about the others prob will get a new center plate from 13 beef so i could put 2 or 3 below or above radio. i want to look as clean and simple as possible. last question is what brand? i am thinking autometer ultralights which are silver with black lettering the interior of the car will be black and so will the outside so it could work, would love some older style hks gauges but cant get an intire set and by the time u do they are just as much as a new set any advice on the setup would be appricated!

sounds like all you really need is a boost guage. fuel, tach and speedo should all still work regardless which 12a. i suppoose a water temp. guage w/ actual numbers on it would be nice to have. and make sure you have some kind of oil pressure guage whether it be stock or after market

vdo vision...

I have auto meter (phantom) and like 'em too... just wish I got vdo to start with. Now that I'm doing another project I'm using vdo. The only problem with vdo is their lack of range in some of their tachs.

Tach and speedo should be fine, I wouldn't replace them. You will need boost, temp, oil pressure. Adding an oil temp, egt and wideband afr wouldn't hurt either. Volt meter won't be a problem but I don't think you know what you'll be getting into replacing the fuel gauge. Fuel pressure would be one of the last gauges I would install, at least to monitor while driving, having one in the engine bay would be ok. Look at the last link in my sig line, it shows my guage setup in the widebody writeup.

Look in the archives, there is a 'how to' for modding the stock op sending unit for an after market op gauge.

IMO, a speedo, tach, water temp, oil pressure, fuel level, voltmeter, boost gauge, and wideband A/F meter are essential on this type of engine. You want to monitor every essential part, and A/F ratio is a MUST!! Going too lean can make the motor go POP real easily.

On the oil pressure gauge, you can get an aftermarket sending unit for the gauge you are going to use, or go with a mechanical type. I personally went with a mechanical type. Cheaper and in most cases just as accurate as it uses the same basic design the electrical senders use, just with a needle attached instead of a potentiometer.
