What is the fluid capacity for a 5 spd transmission?
I'm trying to find out how much fluid a 83 5 speed tranny holds the FSM said 2.1 but my Haynes said 1.8???
i just double checked and yes, the FSM does state 2.1 qts. however, it usually takes about two quarts. the extra .1 of that 2.1 quarts is residual in the gearbox and you'll never be able to fully drain the trans. i like the get the car in the air and level before i start any refilling. i fill the trans until i can touch the fluid with the tip of my index finder when probing the fill hole. this is usually about two quarts.

I've recently filled from dry and it spilled out at 1.8 quarts. so i rolled it around to get the gears saturated, then I quickly crammed the other .2 in as it started spilling out agian. Better safe than sorry, but, I don't think it's going to take mroe than 2 quarts.

Im putting in Amsoil 75-90. Im doing a swap from auto. And it all drained out when I pulled the engine and tranny out of my parts car and its been sitting for almost 2 months.
