blwfly- Thanks for your response, there was not much difference between the 10A, 12A and 13B when they first came out in the late 60s early 70s using more capacity for power. The 12A led the way in 82 when it went analogue efi and turbo, and this is my favourite engine. The 13B caught up five years later, and since then efi and turbo have became more complex in the search for power putting work on the 13B beyond the scope of the average do it your self owner.

Rebuilding and tuning a carb makes you feel part of the car, using a laptop to map an efi leaves me cold. So long live the traditional 12A engined gen 1.

The only way this thread makes any sense at all is if you are comparing completely stock, as delivered from the factory, engines. By that measure it is a no brainer if you are really familiar with these motors. The GSL-SE is the most reliable, longest life rotary ever made, nothing else even comes close. Guys in the business say they very commonly see over 200,000 miles, and some over 250,000 on the original motor. The car shown in my avatar was an SE, and had really excellent compression with over 185k when I sold it.

The GSL-SE motor was the first rotary with direct oil injection into the rotor housings, all previous motors having the oil injected only into the carburetor. The SE is also the last motor built with the 3 mm apex seals. Consequently, in stock form, this is the only motor with this combination of the most durable apex seals and the best lubrication.

I am not sure about world market cars, but for those sold in the US, everything after 1985 has 2 mm apex seals, and worse yet, multiple pieces seals, so they are more fragile. Before anyone comes back with some bullshit about getting a million miles on their 1989 motor, there will alway be exceptional cases - what matters is averages. What kind of life does the average motor get? Of course if your idea of a good time is rebuilding your engine every year, you won't care about any of this.
