What A Day!

Remember my post about my RX7's poor runnability which resulted in giving up and selling it? [BTW: I couldn't find the old thread to update]

Well......... I was going to buy the other '85 GSL-SE. I get a call early this morning from the seller saying she's decided to keep the car and would refund my deposit and would meet me at work with it. She came and apologized to no end and gave me my deposit $ back along with a $100 gift certificate to her restaurant. I was upset but I could understand her attachment and she assured me she'd contact me 1st when she decides to let it go [I think that will be never but...?]. I thought, "oh well" and decided to look again for another GSL-SE and even reconsidered the new RX8 but realized it was just too much $ for a pleasure car and not the the same as my RX7.

Not 2 hours later I get a call from the buyer of my old RX7 saying his step-father got mad and wondered if I would buy back my car. He went on to say he'd even take $100 bucks less just to get rid of it quickly. I couldn't believe it but I said YES I would although I'd gladly give him back the full $500 if it's in the same condition as when it left here. He said it was and within 30 minutes of returning home from work it was returned, it was never even taken off the trailer.

Is this a sign that my RX7 didn't want to leave or what?!

I'm in shock, this all really amazes me!

Anyway, I'm going to have my car "restored" now, it definately deserves that. I will spend some additional time trying to get it going again but may need to take it somewhere if it's to involved. I think I'll start with the igniter[s]. I have installed 2 new coils as well, I got them from Advance Auto Parts, one was yellow and 1 was chrome but I was assured they were identical otherwise. A friend said the coils could have been the whole problem and that the 2 new ones may not be the same [and could cause damage if not]. Maybe I'm chasing a "fluke" and the coils were not compatable? It sure seems to be fuel related though, it will idle but will not respond to any throttle. It just spits and sputters when I press the gas pedal but idles fairly well. I was also told that something in the tank dislodged and clogged the new fuel filter?

Back to the drawing board so to speak. I'm just amazed at todays events, I think I'll keep my little RX7 forever now!

Oh, I also realized afterwards that when I signed off the title/entered the buyers info and had the title notarized it made it an "open" title. I guess I'll have apply for a lost/duplicate title to eliminate him transferring it then me transfering it back into my name. I guess I'm out $30 for that but I made that back with the $100 gift certificate!

About the sputtering problem, i had a similar problem. It idled great, but when i gave it gas it would cut out adn almost stall. I found it to be my TPS was unadjusted. If i were you i would go check the TPS suing the 2 light bulb check htingy, and maybe thatl fix your problem, it did mine

"check the TPS using the 2 light bulb check thingy"

What's that process?

It was suggested previously that I check the TPS but I have not yet [don't even really know where it is?]. It was also suggested it could be the air flow meter [or MAF sensor] which I know is under the air filter housing.

I'm in for an endeavor I'm certain but fixing it myself would make me feel so confident

THANKS!

ok, to check your tps , according to many sites, you MUST buy the Mazda TPS light test thing. Screw that. Take 2 headlight bulbs. Take 4 wires, 1 for each positive, 1 for each negative(tape them on). After warming up your car, shut it off and put the 2 negative wires in the plug hole that is not the same direction as the other 2:

the top one, and the positives into 2 the 2 other ones. One in each. Turn your key on, leave engine off. If neither of the lights turn on, turn your tps adjustment counter clockwise I THINK NOT POSITIVE. If both are on turn it clock wise I THINK NOT POSITIVE. Either way, just adjust it until only one of the 2 lights come on. The green plug you hook the bulbs up to is down by your Rich Lean mixture adjustment, well it is on mine.

Yeah, I know......... I'm still shocked. I was dead set to let "her" go but now "she's" in for a treat!

I've found that if I call it a "she", the wife lets me spend more $ on "her"

BigJim, that's Greek to me so I'll need to buy a manual and try to figure this out or send here somewhere. I used to have a Chiltons manual somewhere but it never was a big help in my opinion, too oriented towards mechanics.

THANKS for the help, I appreciate it!

No new news, been very busy. I hope this weekend produces that sound of a well running rotary, you know the one

I did research some of the direct wire posts and I may do that as well. I'll start with the fuel system then on to the ignition until I either get it going or give up and call a professional.

I was thinking more like Outer Limits Congrats on getting your car back! Hopefully it'll be something as simple as the TPS.

I sold my first rx-7 (83 gs) out of unadultered frustration....sold it for what i payed for the rebuilt mazda trix motor....dumbass me.. a couple months later i call the guy up to see if he wants to sell the car back to me. he lost his job said yes. but tried to tack on $1500 more then he gave me for it... so i had to let her slip away ....one day when i'm a famous f1 driver i'll stalk her down and reclaim her as MINE!
