Talking Bunch of Advice Needed! Help Appreciated!

Hey guys #$@#load of questions here. PLEASE answer what you can. I would've searched for most of this stuff, but I think a lot of it is related. Let me know what you all think.

1)Well I ended up getting the RB streetable header presilencer combo. So its on the car along with the small blockoff plate on the back of the engine (where you take the elbow piece off at.) I took the airpump off and it turns out RB sent me the wrong blockoff plate! I called back and the correct one is on the way. I went to the hardware store and picked up a yoohoo belt. Threw that bad boy on there and its nice and tight. One problem though. It sounds like it is squealing when I crank the motor to start it. Once the car starts it quits. Makes a really nasting noise when cranking on startup though. I put belt dressing on it, but didn't help any. Does the 3L220 belt always do this?

2)Also, I'm getting a considerable amount of backfiring when running. I even had one "uncle buck" backfire after I shut it off once. What is the main problem that cause a backfire? Timing?

3)She's putting out some white smoke as well. I think that might be the Marvel Myster Oil burning off, but I'm not sure. What does white smoke usually signal?

4)When I was messing with the car earlier the choke stopped working right. When I turn the key it doesn't stay out anymore, it goes back in. I've been sticking a quarter behind it to hold it out. Why does my choke no longer stay out?

5)My Rex won't run unless the choke is on. When I take the choke off it ALWAYS dies. Even after it is warmed up. Also, the lowest it will rev without dying is about 1500 RPM. Anything below this, and it starts shaking pretty hard, and then dies. Could this also be related to the timing?

6)When I put it in reverse or drive (Automatic ) I have to give it gas or it will kill the car. Consequently, I'm chirping the tires everytime I am putting the car in anything beside N or P. What is causing this? Also, If I have the car in drive and try to stop the revs go down and it dies. I can't idle in drive without one foot on the brake and the other on the gas to rev it. It does the same thing in reverse also. Why won't she idle correctly when in gear??

I've made lots of progress the last couple of days, but it seems like just as many things are going wrong now.

Please offer any advice you might have on these topics. I know that many of them have been covered hundreds of times, but I think most of my problems are related, and could help diagnose each other.

Thanks in advance for the advice!!!

lol, I love the new sig .

I would start by checking timing and adjusting the mixture. Make sure you have all the block off plates on too with gasket sealant, otherwise youre just asking for problems.

check for vacuum leaks, adjust timing, do tune up, replace fuel filter

check for leaks on block off plates- use RTV

Choke- see if the wire came out- it's electrically operated- it has a sensor on the engine.

Check for accidentally un-plugged plugs on the engine.

Oh, and PUT A DAMNED MANUAL TRANNY IN THAT BITCH!!

Yeah, I thought checking the timing would be the first step. That's what I've got planned for Saturday. Do you guys have any tips on how I should set it? Is timing advance a good or bad idea? What are the advantages?

As for that manual tranny....

Right now I've got enough problems to deal with, lol. But someday when she's running a little smoother and feeling a little better that might be a possibility.

The sensor that makes the choke work is on the back of the water pump housing, FYI.

Also, I would just set the timing stock for now until you can possibly solve all your problems. No need to potentially create more problems by trying to "trick out" the car more when it doesnt even work stock.

As for the belt sqeal, Im not sure.

The white smoke could be coolant burning, or it could just be "normal" smoke that you couldnt see before with the cats.

So, check the timing, adjust the mixture, and report back if you still have some problems .

Watch it RMD, those are fighting words!!

Good advice though. I"m pretty confident that the car will take shape now that I have my exhaust on it. I can finally tune everything and get it back up to snuff I hope.

And yes, I guarantee you'll be hearing back once the timing is set up.

BTW, does anyone know where I can find the stock timing settings at? I've looked around but to no avail....

1- mine never did make any noise.
2- Exhaust leak.
3-White smoke is either MMO/ATF or coolant.
4-Like TJ said, check the sensor behind the waterpump housing, you might have broken a wire off it.
5- Vacuum leak
6- vacuum leak also. And once its fixed, then set your idle speed to be about 1200-1400 in P. The drop it into D, it should drop to around 750, if its still too high, then drop the P idle speed till it drop to 750-800 in D.

For timing specs, look under your hood.....literally.
Theres a sticker that tells you the specs.
