What could happen if...

I brought my 85 GSL(stock + msd coils & 6a booster) in for repairs after 2 weeks or so they couldnt figure out the problem still, I received some good ideas from the club members, and ended up needing to replace the shutter valve, but when I went to pick up my still broken car I couldnt get it to start, I opened the hood to find all the vacume lines going into tha carb mixed up, even one of the oil metering lines was misplaced(they also lost the wing nut for my card stud), this garage said that it didnt mater where you hook these lines up to as long as they go somewhere, they also said they had it running like that and decided to try to burn some carbon out by running it hard, but it wouldnt start for me until I properly replaced all lines, then it would barely move and kept stalling , I replaced the sutter valve after it was found to be no good and it is almost drivable again. a compression test showed me that I do now need a new engine, but it was running very good until the original loss of power occured, could my engine have died at the same time as the shutter valve? or could the actions taken by the garage have caused one of these problems?
