What color should I paint the 85GSL?
It's time for me to plan the re-paint of my silver 85GSL. Originally I figured to just use the old color, but then I started to admire this pearlescent white that I see on some cars. I think it would be pretty good, and it's not so far from the silver that I'd have to paint the doorsills, etc.
Now, I have vivid image of the85 in pearl white, but no mental image of it in silver.
Will I do the right thing, or is this a sin?

I just painted my 84gsl, it was also grey. I amlost painted it a white color to match my mustang (and I had enough extra paint left over from painting the mustang). But I ended up just using a more modern looking silver color. I'm happy with how it turned out.

Don't paint it black, I thought I like it when I first got it, but soon I realized, every other color stays cleaner looking even if they are dusty compared to black.
I would sugguest a color with heavy metalic added(gray/blue/green/white/red)etc, which really hides tiny scratches REALLY well I found out. Black looks dusty the same day its washed/wax'd. I hope if you change color you change the jams and under the hood also, good luck!

It took a few weeks to get it done, but I didn't work on it for very long stretches, a hour here and a hour there type of deal.
If you have a compressor and a place you can spray it you can save a lot of money doing it yourself. I am even ising a semi cheap gun, Devilbis Finishline (about $60) It might not be show quality, but you can say you did it yourself
Plus the car is pretty much going to be a track ***** for me, so I didn't want to put to much time/money in it. Then I would just get upset if/when something happened to it.

Randy,
That car looks good! Do you know the PPG number or color combo? If I can apply a slightly jazzier silver than the old one it might look good.
I figure to shoot it myself: either rent a spraybooth or just build one in the driveway with 2x4s and 4 mil poly.
The trick is good prep: lead in the dings (lead doesn't pop like bondo, and it feathers into the metal like nothing else), remove the removables, mask good leaving the margin on the old paint.

I picked a fairly common color so it would be easy to match up later on. It is a 2003 Honda Accord silver matalic. I sprayed it in my garage. Put a small fan blowing out a window and hosed down the floors before I started. For being only the second car I have ever painted I am really happy.

I'll be painting it again but not sure which color yet. Maybe silver like yours but with a few tablespoons of the orange I have on it now.

In all seriousness, I like the look of bright orange on a 7, I think it looks bad-***.
There is a guy on here with an orange 7, with a "rotary inside" logo on the back window... I'll see if I can find the picture...
*edit* The pictures got moved, so I can't show you, but Smeagol was the one, but I don't even know if he ended up getting the car... it didn't look good from his last post in the thread...

Maybe I should give it a good carnival color (the 83 will, of course, get the Misty Blue). That way I can use them as Mood Cars.
The orange looked good, but I've got red leather seats, so orange, green, etc., are out. And I don't like black. Pink (or better, fuscia) would be OK, but then I gotta paint the panels and engine comparment too.

I stopped by the Mazda dealer during lunch and they had a MazdaSpeed Protoge in a cool metallic pearl orange. I just found the new color for my car! I`ll post a pic later when I get home.

found it!
it's Smeagol's car.
more pics here, or if the above doesn't work:
http://www.home.earthlink.net/~mmanitta/rx7.html
it's also got a maroon interior, doesn't look to bad in my opinion....

That IS badass! That is nice.
Here's the Protoge I saw today. The color is called Spicy Orange and the code is 2003 Mazda 25T in case anybody wants it. I WILL be painting my GSL this color. The pic is kinda crappy. You really should see the color in person.

edit: wtf? It works in the test area! let me try that again.

You gotta put [ img ] and [ /img ] around your link, minus the spaces, as HTML is not enabled on this forum.

haha, ok... here's how you'd do it, for next time...
just get rid of the HTML all together.
copy the url: http://www.personainternet.com/~www2sdennie/toughguy/Spicy%20Orange%20front.jpg , write [ img ] without the spaces, then paste in the link, then write [ /img ] without the spaces again.
You now have this:
[ img ]http://www.personainternet.com/~www2sdennie/toughguy/Spicy%20Orange%20front.jpg[ /img ]
just take out the spaces and you've got it!
VERY nice color by the way!
