I believe it is for the illuminated key hole.

You lift up on the door handle and a light in the key hole will turn on.

thats exactly what it is. poor grounds are common on the keyhole illuminator, causing them not to function. really a nice thing to have. looks almost "indiglo" or "glow in the dark" green when they work properly.

thats interesting. the light on my 84 SE was an indiglo and checking on my 88 TII, the light is more of a yellow/white. weird. maybe something was screwy with the SE's light...

Only some years/models have the illuminated keyhole. My car should have it, but someone swapped the locks at some point, I imagine. Looks like the outer doorlock keyhole light was an 84-85 thing.

http://www.mazdatrix.com/in-locks.htm

That switch also triggers the light for the ignition keyhole.

Maybe 'cello is talking about the ignition switch and Dave is talking about the outer doorlock? I am pretty sure the doorlock illumination is supposed to be a greenish color.

But how do you find the door handle, if it's so dark you can't find the keyhole? (grin)

Its an off white light that shines through a green plastic screen. The plastic is exposed to the sun, so it is possible yours has faded.

Nice... I was swapping out my window regualtor from my old parts door into my new door and wondered why my new ride didn't have this thing... so I put it in and ran the wire... still have to find the connection for it.

So not only does my window roll up and down ohhh so smooth now... I also found out why my ignition illuminator wasn't working.

Wait a sec...???

Are u guys talkin about the ignition keyhole or the outside door keyhole...???

Because my outside doorkeyhole DEFINATLY does NOT have a provision for a illuminated light..... on either car.

And why do I have "No Life" ...??? haha

Some cars have both illuminated, the ignition as well as door lock.

the ignition illumination was a GS and up option as was the illuminated driver's door lock cylinder.

that is a good question. no other original RX-7 brochure that i have other than the ones for 84-85 list the illuminated key hole on the driver's door. it was standard on all GS and up grades. i should have specified in my above post that it was standard equipment on the mentioned key hole and ignition cylinder. it sounded right to me the first time i read it, lol.
