What 5 speed trans will fit my 1980?

I have a question.
What 5 speed tranny will be an exact fit for my 1980? I have a 4speed currently and 4000 RPM at 70 mph is not conducive to great gas mileage.

The be vague, any 5 speed will fit. To be exact a 79-80 5-Speed will be direct bolt in. I actually get better gas mileage on the freeway in my 4-Speed SA than I did in my 5-Speed FB. Plus it's awesome to be right in the powerband and you can just mash it to take off. You can post a WTB in the for sale section or the FS section in your regional forum. An FB 5-Speed will be the next closest thing but you have to modify the tunnel and console for the shifter

you need a 5 speed tranny from a 79-80 model for a direct fit. you can use one from a 81-85 but you will need to trim the tranny tunnel back 2" since those trannys use a shorter style shifter that sits farther back

PLUS major cosmetic surgery to the center console, radio panels, etc... ;p
so unless the 2" closer is desired, go with the SA gearbox...

thats not true. i have a FB 5 speed in my 79 and i didnt change anything with the stereo surround or anything. doing the nothing was easy. plus, the FB trans is more reliable if you do any hard driving. my SA trans was well taken care of and it got stuck in 3rd gear during a track day. I wasnt even driving it very hard cause it was just a driving class and not a race. i just shifted into 3rd during the 2-3 lap and it wouldnt come out. apparently this is a known issue with the SA trans.

did you change out the tailshaft ? in order to fit a FB tranny into a SA model you HAVE to cut the tranny tunnel as well as figure out something with the shift bezzly at the very least.im curious, what did you do? pics?

definitely didnt change anything on the tranny. i tried to initially use the FB mount but couldnt get it to work. so, i then tried the SA mount and finally got it to mount. i used a dremel to cut the small section out. luckily first cut was dead on.

BUT

i looked the other day and i was mistaken..kind of. i didnt have any issues with the shifter surround, but thats cause its not in. i VERY rarely drive the car and i still havent even put a shift **** on it since i swappe the tranny a few months ago. i also need to trim the metal surround that bolts over the tranny hole. so i havent even put the surround back on. my bad. i guess ill cross that bridge whenever i get around to finishing it up.

OK, I have found a few 5 speed trannys in the Houston area. How do I identify the 1979-80 when it is sitting in a junkyard?? Any identifying marks, numbers etc.???

Well the bumpers stick out like an old porsche 924 and the taillights will be like yours. If the taillights are the same you're good to go. Those are the two real easy identifiers.

And if the tranny is out of the car, the 79/80 will have the shifter directly connected to the tranny case. The FBs have a remote shifter (sits on a box at the end of the tailshaft with a rod that connects the box to the tranny).
