weird prob

Well ontop of some timing issues and stuff ... now my car is back to dieing if i slam on the gas ... yes i've adjusted the mixture screw which is set at about 3 turns outwards ... and no its not the fuel filter ... and normally when you spray some carb cleaner or similar item your engine "should" rev up a bit but mine even if i spray the tiniest amount it just dies now ???

i have the exact same problem in my 85. i replaced fuel filter and fuel pump, it helped my idle but yeah when i go WOT real fast the car just bogs down and will die if i keep holding it. if i slowly push in the gas its fine. is it possible that were flooding the engine?

it could be that you have alot of crud in your gas tank and its cloging up your fuel filter if you just replaced it. you can always get one of the glass ones from an auto parts store so that way you could monitor it.

mines a clear plastic and i can see everything ... and if it did clog up it would also affect my top rpm which it doesn't ... as soon as i get it above 1,500rpm and slam on it it rev fine all the way to 8000rpms no prob

TiViD's problem sounds like an acclerator pump issue to me. I think you may have that problem as well. Try to look down the carb with the car off and pull on the linkage. You should see a stream of fuel squirt out. I am no carb expert, but that is what I think it could be.

Exact same thing has happened to me, and theres no way its the fuel filter. I've changed it 3 times, and even the second after I change it, its the same. I've been reading on the accelerator pump and figured its that or I need to rebuild my carb.

I have to 2nd the accelerator pump. I'm an admitted newbie with the nikki but back in my V8 days Holley's would act the same if you had too little amt of gas coming from the pump. These carbs are old so it may just be time for a rebuild.

If your car is running you may want to get a junkyard carb and tear into it. Get a rebuild kit and do it up on the kitchen table. Once you've gotten it right take off your orig carb and replace it with your new rebuild. That way if your new carb has some kinks to work out you can, in theory , put back on your old carb to get you around.

if it was lack of fuel ... why would the engine stumble and almost die or even die sometime when i spray some carb cleaner?

I have always found that carb cleaner bogs the engine. Sounds like you might be a bit lean at idle though if the carb cleaner kills the motor that easily.

with the engine off and air cleaner removed, if i pull on the linkage gas does squirt out. I am not really sure how much use my carb has seen before me... I got it off ebay a while back...What exactly does a carb rebuild entail?
