Weird clutch/tranny problem.

ok, so I'm having intermittent clutch issues of sorts...

1st, every once in awhile after the car has sat for a week or so it takes some driving to keep the pedal pressure up. If you drive on teh HWY for a few minutes it's almost like you need to pump the pedal to get more pressure... but then it just goes away after a few.. Thinkin the master or slave is needing a rebuild....

2nd, this one is new. Yesterday as I pulled into my parking lot at work in the morning (~10min drive) I noticed a noise when you push the clutch in. Kinda like it was ticking something as it spun. (picture a fan blade just barely hitting something as it spins) Came back out & it was fine the rest of te day. That's odd...

3rd, last night on the way home I pull up to a stoplight... blah blah, light turns green, it wouldn't go into gear. I'm not talking about grinding the gears or anything, it just wouldn't budge. clutch pressed, pumped, rolled backwards a ways etc etc... Just didn't wnt to go. After a minute it just decided, ok nevermind, I'm fine now, and off I went...

Huh? the pressure leak I get, but the tranny?

What color is the clutch fluid? Is it still the clear yellow tinted fluid it was when new , or is it a rust or brown color?

peace

I had this happen some years back on my 84SE. The clutch pedal thing and the gear thing, not the ticking/clicking. As it turns out there was some air in the system somewhere and it needed to be bled. Mine was stuck out of gear as I was rounding a corner. I coasted to a stop and my clutch pedal actually stayed on the floor as I was attempting to return to normalcy. Bled the system and have had no problems since. It's been seven or eight years and at least 40K miles now. HTH.

If it has turned colors, it is most likely has water in it or has gotten very hot.

How old is the clutch? pressure plate?

Also do you have any oil leaks?

peace

It's "reservoir". French, I believe.

Sounds like your throw-out (clutch release) bearing may be going out. Also, your clutch slave cylinder may be in need of a rebuild or the clutch master cylinder may be recirculating, which would also indicate a need for a rebuild. Since you aren't losing hydraulic fluid, I would tend to think it is the master cylinder. Replacing the throw-out bearing requires removal of the transmission, and at that time you should check the condition of the clutch disc and pressure plate. Good luck! -Mike

hmm... I like the idea of bleeding the system 1st. I think I'll start there this weekend. I'll just drive the truck until then.

I'll also look a lot closer for leaks, but I have seen no evidence. I'll really tear into it this weekend hopefully, I'm just getting ideas of what to do while I'm away from the car.
