Question Wax Choices?

Hey guys, I got a car care question here.

I spent the better part of today working on my car. Changed the oil, dusted and vacumed, then washed. It is getting time to wax her again, and I have been using the Turtle Wax Hard Shell Liquid wax because its relitivly fast and seems to do a nice job.

I have an '84 GSL with original paint (the orange one in my avitar) .

My question is what do people use for wax? What are the good choices what are the poor ones?

Thanks in advance

Just say no to Turtle products... I dun like em!

I hear Mother's (my friend uses some 3 step wax) products are good... might not be as quick and easy as the Turtle stuff but the results are MUCH better.

For me, I just use plain ole 100% carabuna wax. I find that you just can't beat plain old carabuna wax!

Turtle wax seems it will do him fine because it appears he can't see too well.... the car is red in the avatar... not orange.

I have a silver '84 GS with original paint, and I have these funky scratches only on one fender... not sure exactly where they came from, but it basically looks like someone took some steel wool to most of the fender and lightly scratched it up pretty nicely....

Anyone know of a good wax that would cover small scratches quite nicely? I came across something from turtle wax called "Color Magic"... aparently it blends into the colour of your car... I am skeptical, but mum bought it for the car w/o even thinking and brought it home. I'm reluctant to try it unless I get some feedback of some sort...

I have heard alot of good things about Mothers (Mothers being the brand name, not the wax that my mother brought home :P) wax... a LOT of good things.. unfortunately I haven't seen any cars done with it myself, or bought any, so I can't really say... but if someone can point out a good, QUALITY wax that will get my stock paint back to original shine (or at least take some of the microscratches out), point me to it!

Ya I guess I am the one that took the pic, and its my car so I know what colour it is.

R7 to be exact.

Any way as far as the colour match wax is concerned...

I have a friend that just loves it, but I have never sceen it usee on an RX7. It did a nice job on his girlfriend's Tempo POS but other then that I relly don't know too much about it.

Thanks for the feed back guys!!

I use Meguiar's three step car polish system and it works great. I have some spots that like like small scrathes under the clearcoat or something and the polish will remove them for a while. They will go away when I polish them and then will come back when it needs to be polished again, it's weird.
I tried the Meguiar's car polish on a 1977 oxidized van and it made the paint shiny. I was shocked because the vans paint looks like crap.

Thats because it hides the scratches not removes them, when it wears off you see them again. S100 is the best wax for the money if you can find it, try a harley shop

You need to remove the oxidation (dead paint) first. The carnuaba wax just seals what you've got for a finish. I have been using the 3 step Mother's for years and I swear by it! It takes 2 to three hours to do the car from start to finish- but remember, it's time well spent. I've got original paint on my one '83 and it gets good results at the car shows that I go to. As far as the Color Magic- don't use it. I won't go into the actual list of "stuff" that they put in there, but it's pretty scarey. As far as removing tar and that sort of thing, you can get a "bar" (kinda like heavy clay) that you can safely rub of this sort of stuff.
Oh, and one more thing. Pick an overcast day to wax your car, the direct sunlight will screw up the finish of the carnuaba wax as your applying it.

TR-6 works great to remove oxidation. shiny chrome can with blue or green writing. available at kragen and pep boys. power buffer helps a lot with this.

after that Eagle 1 Wet polish. Gives deep glossy shine.

after that i like Nu Finish. orange can. best price at K-Mart or Wal-Mart. This stuff gives more gloss and great oxidation resistance.

Best ways to Remove:

Oxidation - A professional wax cleaner and rubbing compound, the good stuff by 3M - in that order. Don't rub through the clearcoat/paint and don't expect magic

Scratches (minor) - 2000 grit wet / dry (very wet)followed by rubbing compound and then buff - then wax. Using sandpaper on your car will scare the crap out of you but it will do wonders for bad paint.

disclaimer on the above 2 - if you don't know what you're doing, don't do it. If you have a junker to practice on, you will be amazed

Wax - the 3 step systems are great (mother's or McQuires) but the 3rd step is a waste of time

IMHO

I would hate to see your car after you applied 100% carnauba wax. Pure carnauba has the consistency of brick. You would be scraping the crap out of your paint

Anyone telling you they are 100% Carnauba is lying. Most waxes are 10-30%. Griot's is 33%.

Always used Mothers au-natural Carnuba wax...Tedious, but nice finish. Once you get a good coat on there you can 'rinse' off the car w/out soap and rebuff again..Lasts a good while too..(Ever do a 'spit-shine' on shoes? I do the same thing on the car, dribble a little water on the car while you wax it in..You get a mirror shine!)... Biggest downside is the tedious application process...

I'll also add that Zaino is good stuff. Makes my 10 year old FD paint look like glass. Lasts a while too.
