Wink Warning rotary works gilmer!!!!!

So i took my all my a/c stuff out. and my air pump/VAC.

Bought the rotary works gilmer pulley.

alternator pulley when on fine, main pulley went on fine. but the pump/fan pulley wouldnt go on as the shaft hole was too small....so i took it to my friend to have it drilled larger. he measured some stuff and realized that the screw holes around the hole were not even.... so he redrilled them about a 1mm off.

get it home and it all fits great i put the clutch fan back on (needed smaller screws but no bigge, thats what ace is for!) and went for a test drive.

its ungodly loud. like louder than a supercharger whine. but its badass and the idle is alottttt smoother. so i take it out for some hard pulls and everything is awesome.

i get home and rev is a few more times just to check and then i see coolant spraying everything!!!!

it was coming from the top of the pump housing (below the alternator)

so it seems the old water pump couldnt handle the stress of the gilmer. also i think having that heavy clutch fan made it even worse.

So i just ordered a new GMB pump (hopefully aluminum just for weight) and then i ordered a 2spd 96 taurus electric fan (friend runs one on his rx2 and SA and loves it)

so im going to flush the system and replace the pump and then use electric fan.

should keep cooling good and also save weight and take stress off the pump (not having the clutch fan on)

engine still runs fine but being i love me a 12a im not going to turn that car on until this is all done.

so...

IF YOU BUY THE GILMER YOU MAY HAVE TO REDRILL, ALSO DONT USE THE CLUTCH FAN AS IT ADDS EVEN MORE WEIGHT/STRESS ON THE WATER PUMP SINCE THE ALTERNATOR IS ATTACHED TO IT.

but the pump was only 20 bux and the fan was 40 so .....not too bad.

I have a feeling that you got the wrong water pump pulley. The water pump bolt pattern and pilot changed dimensions frequently (FB is different from S4 is different from S5, for starters) so you need the correct pulley for your water pump.

Betcha that the pulley was also bottoming on the water pump and chewed through it.

I hear you can drill holes to quiet things down. It's the air popping out of the channels as the belt slams into them.

i ordered the GMB OEM 82 pump, i heard GMBs were all aluminum. i almost got the s4 aluminum pump but the GMB was only 20bux so either way i dont mind.

looking at the one on my car im not surprised its died of stress.

but hey. sometimes what we think are bad things are just opportunities to get better things.

i forgot to mention. i ran the car with the clutch fan (while checking the pulley itself) and it ran fine, whined, didnt slip. made no other noises. but when i put the clutch fan back on thats when it started making noises. so the weight of that clutch fan really is too much if youre running the underdrive system.

all kinds of issues.

also think ill upgrade my battery and alternator as well while the car is sitting. =]

i got an FC water pump/water pump housing (heard the OEM pumps flow better and its aluminum as well like the GMB and i can keep the alternator bracket) and yet again the gilmer water pump pulley doesnt fit the FC holes either. so it didnt fit the FB or FC. complete bullshit. im not going to redrill it again to fit. im just going to buy an FC oem pump pulley and run that with the oem pulley on the fc alternator i got and then ill put my OEM fb main pulley back on and run the main OEM belt and a yoohoo belt.

also the gilmer whine did get annoying over time. its ungodly high pitched.

my friend said he had issues with rotary works as well.

just warning yall

Thanks for the heads up. I was thinking about ordering a Gilmer from Rotary Works but so far the bad experiences with the product seem to outweigh the positive reviews. I'll stick to the RB double sheave pulleys.

yeah going back to OEM pulleys will be much more fun. one of the guys on here is sending me his FC pump pulley. so well see how the OEM main pulley lines up. but ill be glad to get rid of that gilmer. its a nightmare.
