Wacky Electrical Problem

OK, this really sucks, I have to drive 7 hours Saturday and now my radio doesnt work...

I was fooling around with the dome light because it had a small short in it, and like a dumbass I was using a screwdriver and I guess I shorted out the circuit (or part of it) and now none of that stuff up there is getting power. Neither are my speakers, but my EQ, Radio and Tape Deck are. The seatbelt logicon does come on but only for a 1/2 second. The door buzzer doesn't ring anymore (which I kinda like), and the spiffy quartz powered clock doesn't show anything.

However, when I drive I can see 1:00 shown in the LCD, but very very lightly. It will only show when he radio isn't getting power...

I checked the fuses, and when I changed fuses I saw a little spark... so I assume it's a good fuse.

Anywhere else to look? I hope to god I don't have to start pulling wires.

you probably blew a fuse. I did when I was attempting to fix the original light console overhead.

That little light assembly is the easiest way to shut down the radio and lights in any car... we used to do it to my friends taurus just for laughs....

I noticed that my clock LCD did that when I had my stereo out and I was messing with ****...I have no idea why...It was kinda weird. Id say, just check ALL your fuses, and make sure your wires are firmly attached to whatever they go to.

could be you bumped a wire when putting your stereo in and knocked a contact loose, and your speaker wires are similarely poorpy connected.

or it could be a fuse.

I looked at the wiring diagram... can't use deductive reasoning to figure out why it's borked.

I am going to triple check that damn overhead lighting deal... maybe whip out the damn voltometer...

This is the problem I'm having now. Car is a 1985 RX-7 GSL, 5 speed 12A, bone stock. I've checked the fuses, they're all good.

Here's my problems and if anyone can help me, I'd appreciate it.

1) Overhead lights do not come on at all, door or dome.

2) Stereo works fine, but won't hold memory for stations. When you turn stereo on, radio or tape player starts to work, antenna goes up, but no sound. I've checked all the connections I can, and everything is fine.

3) LCD clock in dash is blank.

All lights work, dash lights up, just no overhead light, no clock, and no sound.

The engine sounds fantastic, but I really would like to listen to some tuneage sometimes.

It's gotta be either the ROOM or HAZZARD fuse... I forget which one will do it, but Here's why.

The clock, interior light, and memory backup on your radio are all run with the key in the OFF position. Ditto with the beep that says your door is open.

MOST aftermarket stereos also power their internal amplifiers off the memory backup circuit. Hence No cound or stored stations, but the radio will still appear to come on.

All problems point there.

The faint 1:00 on the clock is due to power getting through something else in the system and powering up the clock... Remember science class kiddies, you can power a digital clock with a penny and a paperclip shoved in a potato.

I posted a little while back with a short in the same circuit. Unfortunately, it was like that when I got the car so I have NO luck at all in finding a good place to start. I removed the cigarette lighter, glove box, both bins, both door swithces and the overhead in an attempt to root out the short. It still did it, though the reminder chime, key illumination light and clock memory were still in there. FWIW, my antenna doesn't try to go up and the radio doesn't work on mine now, either. Someone share your common shorts so we might find ours.

Back when I was installing my stereo, I could open and close the door to reset the LCD clock! Not good.

So I pulled everything back out and checked the wiring. I soon found out that I forgot to re-connect the main ground that the dome light, doors and clock work off of. After reconnecting that wire (located behind the stereo surround down near the carpet) everything worked great.

How are you ascertaining that the fuses are good? You can't rely on a visual examination as fuses frequently open up under the little metal end caps where you can't see the break. I recently blew a fuse that opened up right in the middle, but the break was so small as to be practically invisible. I could only see the hairline fracture with a magnifying glass. The surest way to test fuses is with an Ohmmeter, or you could use a voltmeter and check that voltage is present at both ends of the fuse.

or just plug in a spare fuse of appropriate amp and see if the problems go away. If so, toss the previous fuse.

My circuit blows the fuse the instant it touches with the ignition being off. Somewhere between the load side of the fuse and one of the components I'm touching ground and don't know where to start. I've never chased one of these shorts like this - any tips?

check fuses with a multimeter just to be sure, check that the battery is charged and can start the motor.

Recheck your fuse make sure it just didn't re-blow, if it did then you have a short somewhere. Then check the eye terminal ground that should have been attached to the dome light assembly that screws into the roof.
