Very weird problem

Whether the engine has completely warmed up or still cold, slightly pressing the gas down when the car is at idle, will stall it out. I've found that if I tap the gas a few times to get the RPMs past 1000, it will accelerate fine.

The carb has been rebuilt and the car idles perfectly at 800 RPMs. It's not weather related because it's been doing this since March.

Before the carb was rebuilt, the accelerator pump was NOT working. However, there were NO stalling problems what-so-ever.

The shutter valve hose has been clamped.

Anyone have any ideas?

Does it happen only after the engine idles for a short time...say a stoplight, or everytime after it gets down to idle?

It happens everytime. I drive 100 miles per day and it's been doing this everyday and everytime I slowly hit the gas from idle.

It's a real PITA when I'm in traffic; it often stalls if I don't tap the gas a few times like I mentioned earlier.

Any ideas?

Check if the accelrator pump is still working. And make sure your spark plugs aren't total crap.

The spark plugs were replaced when the new engine went in the car. I know that the accelerator pump is working, but I'm not sure if it's adjusted correctly.

What carb are you using? I had a similar problem. It can be many things so I just wanted to know which carb it was. All of the jet screws and etc. have to be tuned just right in conjuction with the idle screw and the choke. Try running at half choke and see how it revs.

The factory Nikki on a stock 85 GS. Running it at half choke makes the RPMs go up, but there is no hesitation at all. It wants to stall, if I slowly press the gas pedal while the car is at idle.

I dunno, to me it sounds like a classic accelerator pump problem. At least that was the first thing that came to mind while reading your thread. Since it only does it from idle, it's probably an adjustment problem.

i'm going to say accel pump too. i would just tighten it up some and see if it doesn't solve the problem.

I looked in my Haynes manual to find something of relevance for adjusting the accelerator pump. I came up empty handed. Maybe the Chilton's has something? I've never seen one adjusted on a rotary, so I wanted something to "fall back on" incase I get stuck. If it's similar to accelerator pumps on other cars, I think I can figure it out.

there is a threaded rod with a nut on it that attaches to a bracket of the pump. tighten that nut and see if it helps.

probably the accel pump. you might wanna change plugs just to rule that out, since yours aren't brand new.
