Vented Hoods II

started a new thread so you can easily find the updates...

Today we made a mold of the substructure - it's setting overnight and tomorrow we start cutting up the substructure buck to make the custom structure to go around the vents.

Once that's done we cut the original hood in half (front skin from substructure, not cut down the middle )and start chopping in the vents.

No pics as my rather expensive camera has been banned from the 'glass shop. Resin + glass fibres + delicate electronics = 1 sad Manntis.

so the hood gets molded without the vents and they are cut in afterwards, is that right? If so are you going to be selling CF non vented hoods as well?

You've got to give these guys some pictures,,,something . you'd be surprized just how well a ziplock bag works. I for one would like to see the process you are going about to make these hoods.
'substructure' , 'skin' are you making an impression of the bracing of a stock metal hood by removing the 'outer' skin ? is that the 2 pieces you plan to bond together ? bracing and skin. when done will the underside look like a standard metal hood, with vents no less.. what did you use to cut off the outer skin after breaking loose all the tack welds, wait,,,, is the whole thing tack welded ? edges ? isn't it a reverse impression buck out of wood ? if you want ready made shipping crates, rustle up some pallets, a few wood cuts
and maybe a couple of other mods. and that would be a very sturdy shipping crate, heavy but nothing will happen to the contents. when i've sold a couple of glass moonroofs to people around the world i started with a wooden pallet(s) and nothing happened to the contents during shipping. check out a local car dealership parts dept. lots of shipping containers thrown out for ideas...... i make all kinds of stuff myself
just curious about the process your doing....

We made a transitional mold of the stock substructure - the 'back' side of the hood when open - and we're modifying it to keep the rigidity and hood latch/hinge points while allowing the vents through. Once we have a shape that supports the hood while allowing clearance for the vents, we make the permanent mold.

Next we'll cut the skin from the bracing on the stock hood, cut vents into the skin to make a buck that we'll cast the mold for the skin from.

Once molds are complete we lay up the skin side and substructure side, then bond the two together for a rigid vented FRP/CF hood with stock latch and hinge points.

As stated in previous threads I plan to offer an all-FRP version and one with an outer skin of CF in place of the top layer of FRP for those that want the carbon fibre look

Price will be announced when final materials cost per hood is established. The mold & fabrication has already set me back $2,000, but I'm trying to keep the costs down. In the other thread I mentioned a CF price of $499, but I think it'll come in a bit less... and far less for the all-fibreglass version

Murrican money.

The FRP hoods will likely come in around $299 USD plus shipping. As I said we have to work out the final material and labour costs.

so what about my question, will a "stock" one be made as well, or are they all being vented?

once I have a prototype to show I'll gauge interest in FRP or CF stock hoods... for now the plan is vented, but if demand for stock ones are high enough I'll consider it.

$300 for a fiberglass vented hood is a damn good price IMO.

Man, 2 K invested,,,,you have the materials then ??
the epoxy your going with 300/ and #11 hardner ?
i would say 300/ and # 41 hardner for a thinner but as rigid results. how much epoxy for one hood, finished ?
2 quarts, 1 gallon, + ?? at $50.00 dollors a gallon.

your carbon cloth is 5.8oz 2x2 twill ? i know $ 28.00 dollors a yard. 50" x 36" is pricey but not bad. IMO.

RTV , pourable for molds (buck) 4.4 lbs. is $80.00 dollors.
and vasoline as the release.

Okay... i'm right in the middle of fabricating a carbon hood for myself, but no substructure, hood pins. would you please release the distance of where , from the front edge of the hood and from the side, where the suction starts to extract under hood heat/air,, maybe?

i'm looking at around $ 200.00-$250.00 dollors for a carbon hood. i'll keep the mold if it doesn't get ruined in the process. i've been waiting to see what you'll be pricing your carbon hood, $500.00 dollors means i can't afford it. i totally understand you got overhead to make back.and i really hope your project(s) turn out good for you too. we'll see, huh ..

Just to clarify since pics aren't available....you are going to be putting a "427" style dam at the front edge of the hood opening, right? What's the latest on this?
