Don't be affraid to ask questions.. but do so if a search results nothing you can use. any person can buy enough carbon material to cover a hood(stock steel) and
just resin over the cloth,, a couple of coats would do. for a carbon hood. i've seen pictures of a nsx thats completely covered in carbon and resin, no paint. it looks okay untill you open the doors and the door jambs are still painted the colour the car used to be under the carbon cloth. so it's just for looks and that car is heavier now too.

So there fibreglass hoods and for $200.00 dollors more a person can have a carbon first layer(for show) to cover a 1st gen hood in carbon is cheaper then $200.00 dollors in material. for one layer.

remember you can't gel-coat,then carbon.......

Would it be fair, mark, to ask you to let us build the thing, then critisize what we've actually done, rather than critisizing everything we might possibly do wrong in a way that makes it sound like we've screwed it all up and need you to tell us the right way to do it?

Remember, I have sculptors sculpting, FRP guys doing FRP work, and CF guys doing CF work. Redoing, if I'm not happy with it the first - or fifth - time around.

He's not killing the thread. He's asking detailed qusetions and questioning the design. Nothing wrong with that.

Since day one, Mark has been stepping in "pointing out" numerous things...I can respect that...But Manntis has answered all of these questions in previous threads, as well as how he's going to be doing things. Mark has made a hood already IIRC, so please Mark, if you're trying to giver "ideas," take it to PM's and give them there. Sometimes it looks as if you're only trying to point things out instead of inquiring....Gets kinda old....

Thanks carl. i'm always mis-understood, maybe i should be asking the people who are doing the work, huh. being someone who has made a few fibreglass hoods(doing all the work myself)the progress of your project is very interesting.
i've gone through the whole process, and why i think you don't mind the feedback
you'll have to give me a minute... i'm sure you'll be happy with the finished part.
good luck with sales.

Also, just wait 'till you find out the cost to ship an item the size of a hood in north america.. FYI $ 80.00 - $ 90.00 dollors for ground shipping.

to me, even with the 80-90 dollar shiopping it would be worth it. There is 1 main reason why that is. If i ever want an aftermarket hood, im going to have to pay that 80 to 90 dolalrs no matter where i get it from. Its not like we have a custom hood shop around the corner, or even a corporate hood shop that actually makes them for our cars. We cannot find these anywhere else without paying less money to get it to our doors. Thanks manntis for your efforts, cant wait to see the final product.

Update: Had one pre-production hood installed. It looks great, the hinge and latch points are sturdy, etc. etc.

BUT

I wanted to ensure these would fit both models. While it's awesome for the 12A models, unfortunately the 1/4" drop of the vent touches the right rear corner of the GSL_SE airbox, preventing the hood from fully closing. We're re-molding the vents to rake back a bit more, thereby offering both larger openings and greater clearance.

Uh, just have to chip in... how do you figure chopped strand is stronger than cloth? Cloth has a much higher percentage of fiber per volume, has the fibers oriented in non-random fashions, and gives far more control over thickness than does spraying it with chopped strand.

That said... hrrm. That looks a lot like what I had in mind for my project car... got me thinking now.

A shame I have to angle the vent's really - it looks gorgeous! Really brings out the lines in the car.

Actually I'll ask Matt to post his opinion in here - as the manufacturer I could be seen as biased.

Most SE owners who want the hood are going to be modders. and I'd say most will not have the stock airbox. I'd say keep it the way it is

I would think it obvious a owner who is installing a $500+ carbon fiber vented hood on his $2000 car would have AT LEAST, a cone air filter.

just my two cents.

BTW, pictures look great dont change it and one will be on my car when funds are available.
