Vented Hood Update
We start making the mold on Monday. I've narrowed it down to three designs.
In each there are two main vents, side by side with a thin strip of stock contour in between, running from just behind the rad back to the rear of the hood. The question is should these two vents be smooth, as you see on most Hondas, or should each have tripple vents incorporated in them like on the Feed hood?
In other words, A or C?
Speak now or forever hold your peace

Well, I'm in need of a vented hood, but since I have a FC rad in the car, and that rad is right in the nose (declined), I'd like one custom made to fit my car.
As for your designs, I'd like all of them, it just depends on what style the car is.
Maybe a view from above would help me make up my mind?

any farther forward and the vents would be out of the negative pressure area anyhow, so air would have to be pushed out by the forward vent. Of course the airstream flowing across it might draw it out as per Bernouli's Principle...

With C, what happens if you're sitting at a light and it starts to downpour? Where does the water pour if the openings go back that far? Will there be alot of people wishing they didn't have direct fire?

You are correct, sir.
C is like the Feed hood.
In both cases if the car is sitting still in the drain it may drip into the engine bay - but it would get no more wet than driving though a puddle - or for that matter rain falling through the stock vent in my '85 Daytona turbo. (When I drive through puddles in my 'tona a rather dramatic plume of steam comes out the stock vent in the hood for a few seconds - making it look like I blew a coolant hose )

My 2 cents...
Functional "race" items are nice, but not very practical and are often too bizzare in appearance for most everyday drivers. Why can't someone build a hood with a catchy contour or a set of contours, as opposed to actual vents? There's a very nice hood made for the FD that simply has a concaved area that dips down in the front. I think its sharp. And my guess is that average Joe RX owner would be more interested in such a beast...
Before I get flamed, I know there are hardcore or semi-hardcare drag/SCCA drivers out there, but my guess is *most* drivers don't care about removing heat from the bay, the cars run just fine without doing so. It's simply about looks and having something different than the next guy (which is part of RX ownership anyway, isn't it?)...
And I completely disagree with rain water in the engine bay being no more than what you would get "running through puddle" - there's not that much water that gets into the engine bay. There's a reason that tires have fender wells to work in. Frankly, the thought of rain water splattered all over my engine bay sounds like a bitch to clean up after, and a quick trip to auto rot.
Again, just my 2 cents...

It depends on how much water you're allowing in, and where it's dispersed...
It seems to me, with the design you're proposing, I make one stop when it's raining (and believe it or not, Kansas does have its fair shake of torrential downpours), it looks like you would have water pouring over the battery, A/C, plugs, steering gear, air pump, exhaust manifolds, etc...
And though steam from the engine compartment may look cool - cold water on hot metal is never good.
Don't get me wrong, I love the idea that someone is trying to build products we all might want and I'm not trying to discourage it - I'm simply expressing another, maybe more practical, less radical, and sellable option is available...

If your that worried about rain make a cheap plexi glass cover. Like the old mustangs used to use to cover the cowl in front of the windshield. If it rains put it in while your putting your sunroof back in (kansas has it share of sunshine too, helps to raise the dead sent of slaughtered cattle, Emporia Kansas weekends stank to all hell). It would also work to keep falling debree out while the car is parked.

The battery is off to one side of the engine bay - the vents are well to the centre of the hood, and the centre spine is there not only for structure but to shield the alternator.
As to the steering gear, air pump, etc. these are all sealed components.
Given the number of vehicles on the road with similar or even larger vents in the hood, this whole rain arguement seems much ado about nothing.

I agree with the puddle people, fenders or not...ever notice when you go through a puddle, water shoots out at about 45 degrees from the contact patch...fender or not, thats going on the engine.
I would vote for A, seems to be the cleanest, least ricey design on the block...and anex...dont just go with what someone elts says...ask around dude...and think about it...go drive through a puddle and see what happens to the top of your hood...
infact, i want someone to drive through a puddle fast, and look under his hood right after and tell us what he sees...put an end to this, i would but my car is in 4 pieces.

If that's the A hood, that's got my vote. I was misunderstanding the concept. I thought you were talking about several vents running the length of the hood... I've seen pics with those types of hoods (maybe CP Racing?)
I'll continue to disagree with the water issue, but I can work around it...
Good luck!
