It's the opposite of a boost gauge... Or perhaps negative boost.

The engine is like a air pump, just like the motor in a vacuum cleaner. Stick your hand over the hose of a vacuum cleaner. It'll suck on your hand...

Stick your hand over the intake of the engine and it'll suck on your hand as well...

When you open the throttle, you let air into the manifold. Vacuum goes low.

When you close throttle and coast in gear, vacuum goes high...

On an engine in bad shape, the seal is no good and vacuum is poor.

You can conserve fuel by watching the vacuum gauge and making sure it doesn't go above or below a certain point.

Installing one is very simple. Its just one hose, and you attach it to an open vacuum port on your intake manifold.

I have one, and its nifty.

Cool I guess I will do one to see, will the vacuum gauge tell me if their any leaks or is just for leaks on the seals of the engine?
