Vaccum Advance!!!???

hey guys i just read about unhooking my vaccum advance timing line that goes to my carb. i put caps on both of those and capped off where it went to the carb. the question i have now is do i unhook the wiring that are going to those little boxes that are on the side of my distributor? and also how can i like the cas/distributor cap to top dead center. i wanna check my timing but i havent ever done it with a dizzy!! thanks

DO NOT UNHOOK THOSE WIRES..

not that it will hurt much, but those "black boxes" are the ignitors, w/o those connected, you wont have spark, with no spark: no drive.

"Vac advance" is actually a misleading term.. they're actually "vaccum retard" ports, where more vac = less advance. this reduces idle speed (less efficient combustion) and NOx emissions (reduced EGTs).

dont set the Dizzy to TDC, GET a timing light and RTFM.. its pretty easy

It really is advance:

lower pressure (more vacuum) = less dense mixture = slower flame speed -> more advance needed to build peak torque at the correct crank angle

You want it if you want to maximize low load torque.

Idle timing is handled by the mechanical advance.

Take the caps off of the ports on the dizzy. By capping them it can prevent the normal centripetal advance from occuring. Cap the lines going to the carb/solinoid rack only.
