use a turbo as a muffler
ok so last night i had a dream. so the way its set up is at the back of the car there is a small stock turbo like off a Volvo or something. the exhaust would spool the turbo and give that turbo whistle sound. and then the part of the turbo that would normally go to the intake would just blow back into the exhaust with maybe a propane injector for some flameage
now ive hurd that turbos muffle the exhaust quite a bit and give a deep tone
this would give no performance i think but i don't know but would the intake side blowing back in to the exhaust cause the same exit velocity it would without this setup or would it be increased causing a vacuum effect
before callin me a moron lol remember it was a dream

exhaust idea
ok this was an idea i came up with after reading the thread about a home made muffler
basically it is a 4 inch diameter pipe all the way back and inside that pipe would be a 2 inch diameter preferated pipe(obtained by cutting up all the old resonators, cherry bombs and ricer cans i have laying around and a few im getting from my local muffler shop for free) and the whole setup would be packed with steel wool and high temp ceramic wadding basicly the entire exhast would be one long straight through muffler
just an idea

You'd basically be adding backpressure and restriction to your exhaust. The exhaust would have to spin the compressor before exiting, causing it to slow and that would hurt high rpm performance. Also, why not just put on a better muffler?

Mufflers should be rated on some sort of efficiency scale. I propose sound attenuation / backpressure. The good mufflers would have a high value -- i.e. high sound reduction / low backpressure. A turbo wouldn't rate very high on the scale --> they have reasonable sound attenuation but create very high backpressure.
To make matters worse, you'd have to plumb oil to it (and maybe water).

I won't even comment on the turbo thing.

it wouldnt be used to make hp just for sound
the way i was thinking wasthe exhaust will spin the compressor wheel right then where the downpipe would normally connect would be the tail pipes and then the output side (cold side) would blow back into the exaust ether before the turbo or after ill draw a picture of it
and i cant buy a new muffler cause im poor

So in other words you'd be adding extra piping with no gain other than a slightly quieter exhaust. You'd be adding weight, restriction and a whole mess of piping. On top of that you'd have to fabricate mounts (turbos aren't light), as well as bending pipes and welding them. The air going into the exhaust wouldn't help anything. If anything it would make the restriction issue worse because the oxygen would be taking up space that the exhaust gases normally would. You'd also be adding thermal mass to an already hot engine bay. The exhaust gases passing through the hotside of the turbo would heat up that housing. The housing is iron, which hold heats very, very well. It would then just get very hot and radiate, raising the intake charge temp, resulting in a further loss in power. Even if you can't afford a new muffler, the efforts of designing this system, as well as paying for materials would far outweigh the usefulness of the finished product. I'm really not trying to **** on your birthday cake here, but it would be far easier, cheaper and more productive to buy a junkyard muffler thats in decent shape with the right pipe diameter and repack it with stainless steel wool you can get from Wal-mart for $10-$15. If your really that broke, I don't know how you can afford to drive the car. Take an extra shift, mow a couple lawns, walk a dog or two. But do something to get the money to do the job right.
and as far as me being broke i am the master of gettin **** for free especially auto parts ex gfs dad works at the local junk yard i live offa food stamps ffs so i do what ever i can to get by lol i didnt even pay for my car i traded Derekcat. a laptop for it and i traded some dude a sub and amp that i got for free for my parts car
and i already have all the meterials to do it welder/piping/time(no job) beer and green lol i basicly wanted to know if it would hurt the engine thats why i was gonna do it now cause i just got a freshly rebuild 12a from lady whos hubby rebuilt it 15 years ago drove it 10k miles or so then got rear ended he pulled the engine and it has been sitting ever since i got that fot doing like 5 hours worth of yard work at dudes house
wow im blazed didnt mean to keep goin lol l8r

Wow....
Just do it, post some pictures, and let us know.
May I suggest (while we are in crazy town) you mount a spark plug in the turbo to help spin it faster and burn any remaining fuel on the way out. That way you run cleaner and help save the planet. A saved planet results in a better weed crop, so the result is win-win (and maybe boom).
