updates on the bootleg 7

well, ive been working on the '85 GS all day, i got a few things accomplished..
a. complete radiator / fan assymbly removal...
b. flush radiator with garden hose...
c. reinstall radiator ... *cusses mazda clamps*
d. remove cat converter for the creation of a downpipe at school tommorrow
e. applied engine degreaser all around the engine bay and watched the oil and grime slide off of my engine... i never noticed the mazda 12a logo on top until now..

omfg i cranked the car today without the cat on there (header only), LOUD! too loud, makes me NEED an exhaust.. :| straight pipes = no way, too loud..

anyway, car still wont idle, im still leaking oil...

i think tommorrows a good day to start the sanding / priming process, i needa get some pictures too... anyway, drop your comments at will, and also..if anyone know anywhere to buy a nikki carb rebuild kit for less than $80.00 please tell me...

im not 100% sure to be honest with you, im pretty sure its the oil pan gasket...but it could also be a gasket on the front cover (or something on the front cover...) ...

as for finding the mixture screw and idle speed screw...

No, i looked forever and never once found a screw even resembling them so im assuming they are missing (G#%*)@)($#@)( DAM*IT) anyway,

another update:

Today i put my new reservoir cap on i got from mazda and went to autozone and got some hose and connected my overflow reservoir to the radiator..needless to say my car doesnt overheat anymore (i dont know if it was the radiator flush i did, or the coolant reservoir being in place, but something did it
soon as i get my coolant level sensor that annoying little booger of a light will go off and then i will only have one light to worry about staying on all the time (the e-brake light wont go off...) anyway.. i have a load of homework to do...

edit: i just went outside and did some vacuum hose replacement... so thats another fix ive gotten done..i decided against the rats nest removal due to the loudness of the car right now, and my lack of money to buy RB headers

(the e-brake light wont go off...)
so i take it, the leak has been localized to the front of the engine ... that's a start. any particular side???

my bet is that the screws are there, it's just that they're like the pictures of the food you see in Burger King, they look much prettier in the pictures ... if you have all you emissions stuff in place it can be pretty hard to focus in and find them, just try to pick an easy landmark in the picture and then use that to home in on them (Note, however, that the "idle mixture" screw might to be covered, but the "idle speed" screw is not)

check the brake fluid reservoir ... the light can come on if the fluid is low.

Slingo,
I've been going through all the same stuff in the last couple of months. I'm resurrecting an 82 that had been parked for four years. The fuel system was gummed up beyond belief. Had to clean and coat the gas tank, replace the fuel pump and rebuild the carb. Anyhow I found a carb rebuild kit for the Nikki at Advance Auto for $36. The part # for the 82 was 18025410. Hope this helps. It made a huge difference on mine.

wow.. $36.00 i may have to hit that up and rebuild my carb i found the idle MIXTURE screw today, got it idling a little better, my radiators leaking *sigh* i gotta get some sealer... btw im pulling my engine out sometime next week and i should have some pics for you guys im going to rebuild carb probably sometime this weekend, first time rebuilding a carb, expect me to beg for lots of help...

i rebuilt my storage bins lighting system today, i really need a voltmeter to tell if they are getting juice or not... working on getting my dome light to work, etc.... im probably going to get some kind of light for the hatch and ghetto rig it to a switch at the back of the hatch that i can flip on when i need it... working on straightening out the electrical systemi n the car is a PITA, i took the stock amp out (the wires were cut on it) i think im going to hook it up to a sub once i get a head unit, i only have 1 small sub anyway, but one sub > no sub ... i drained the transmission fluid today, took one bolt out of the top and lamost stripped the other.. i REALLY need metric tools... im probably going to hvae to hacksaw that bolt off once i get the engine/tranny pulled, if i cant hacksaw it with it in the car...then go buy a new bolt ... *sigh* thanks for the tips guys, keep em coming, i appreciate the help alot

i'm going to start spraying rust guard stuff on the surface rust-in the paint- spots. .. i checked up under the car and theirs no rust under there, but the paint has some rust spots in it from where stuff chipped paint off and then the car sat..

oh yeah, im also taking the rats nest off to do some "testing" im wondering how long it will take me to fry the stock cats with no rats nest..i may put it back on once i replace all the hoses on it.

anyway, thats all for today..

more updates... 9/21/2002

well, i went to Trussville mazda today and picked up my coolant level sensor, and its gasket, and also an oil filter.

What kind of oil do you guys use? i bought some Casteroil GTX 5W30 at walmart, anything i should use that WONT kill my engine soon but WILL make it run better? (that rules out redline synthetics ) anyway...

what i did today:
1. removed catylatic converter again to drop the exhaust..noticed the exhaust was WELDED in one spot where it used to be bolted in, so i gotta find an exhaust setup at the junk yard to do until i can afford a new system...
2. removed exhaust heat shield that keeps tranny away from exhaust... k well that was fun..in the sarcastic kind of way.
3. looked at the carb funny and thought to myself "i love fuel injection"
4. took the shifter out of my transmission, got scared and put it back in..theirs just something about looking DOWN into my shifter casing that bothers me.ill remove it again before i drop the tranny down..
oh yeah, i got some new tools today, alot of metric sockets, and some open end wrenches...got the tranny almost all the way off, im now in the process of taking the starter off before i remove the mounts and the last few bolts... took the drive shaft out too, its laying up under the car right now..
i didnt follow the haynes manual for its removal, i misread and did the remove step before the mark position step.... *shrug* guess ill have fun figuring out which way is right eh? anyone ever done it without marking? easy/hard?
5. taking the starter off, one of the wires on it is cut.. looks like a ground ... puzzling... :| ill try to splice it back into living before i put everything back...

anyway, any comments / help is appreciated.. ill keep you guys posted
