Update on CF and fiberglass hoods

Well, I got the hood mounted and it sticks up about a 1/4" too high on the front side. I used 1" square metal tubing about 8" long for the hinge supports, I then welded "T" nuts in it for the bolts to bolt into. Well, I am going to have to go down to 3/4" tubing...just means a little more time to get it all worked out....ugh

Again, I see why not to many people do this....it is very time consuming!!!

Oh well, it will be worth it in the end I think I am in the process of making 3 fiberglass hoods, once they are complete and fit perfect I will let everyone know....see how they sell.....then make the carbon ones. I hope people buy!!!! I have $900 invested in the 55gal drum of resin and many, many hours!!! I have to admit though.....its for the RX so it is worth it

Good to hear that you're not giving up.

Don't forget about the Vents, scoops, etc. And the header panel.

Good Luck!

I am too deep into it now to give up. I am working on the head light lids then the valance. I am making stock units first, then the modified ones.....again it will take some time.....I am in the process of quiting my engineering job and starting my construction co. back up...Yikes!!!!

You said the hood will require hood pins right? No chance of a direct replacement hood using the stock latch? Cause I would be very, very interested in that. I'm also interested in the head light lids and that piece between the headlights when you get to those. Keep it up, I'm sure a lot of us will be interested when you get them done.

Well, I sure hope they sell too, for your sake. Dont everyone hold out for the modded ones, or he will never sell these!! You could always put them on Ebay too . Anway, I really want a stock CF hood, I dont mind the hood clips, but if it would work with the stock latch (maybe I can come up with something myself), that would be even better. Thanks for all the time and work you have into this as it is, and thanks a head of time for mine .

I could eventually make the hoods work on the stock latch, I am just worried about lining it all up and not working??? I would just have to do it and see what it adds to the cost? $50 maybe??

Everyone just hang in there with me!!! I will get to all of the requests, its just that the first one is a bear.....getting everything lined up and fitting right. Once all of the basics are there it will be easy to do all of the scoops and such.....I just cant do every single request because I will have to make a new mold for each one.....I just dont have the space and I have to sell quite a few to pay for the molds. I will probably do a pole on the styles of hoods and use that for what will be produced next. Plan of attack is to make the stock fiberglass hood, headlights, and valance first. Second, CF hood and headlight lids, then start on modifying the parts with ducts and scoops.

Oh yah,

hoods: fiberglass=$250, CF=$350
headlights: FG=$45, CF=$55
valance: FG=$125ish?, CF=$175ish?

with scoops and ducts:
hoods: add $50-$75
headlights: add $10-$20
valances: add $35-$55

Not real sure until I actually make them!

A stock CF hood would be wicked, if you can get it to work with the factory lach/lock it would be even better. Take your time, you are our only hope so we'll wait!

Glad to see people still interested!! I just got the final fiberglass unit done.....everything looks great! RX7.Com bought it, I think its going on their "all motor" yellow car!! I am going to build 1-2 more fiberglass units and then start the carbon ones. My first unit was definatly too thin!! The second one is perfect!!! Final weight on the fiberglass unit is 12.5lbs. The hoods will use your factory hinges and bolts!! You may have to some shimming(ie washers to shim it up), each car is a little diff. Also, the fiberglass hoods are a gray gelcoat but will need to be primed, wet sanded, and then painted. I will get some better pics tonight before I deliver to RX7.COM.

The carbon unit will be a clear gelcoat but will probably need a clear coat over it for UV protection.

Anyone interested in a fiberglass unit while I am making them??

I'm already crafting a prototype scooped header panel - the piece is actually quite compled, being far more 3D than I thought it would be.

Where exactly did you learn to hand lay such huge pieces of CF and fiberglass? My friend has a tough time getting a 1.5" square piece to turn out right!

I like it when I get my car up around 100 MPH and the windshield wipers start to "flap in the wind"

I'd pay the extra $$$ to have the CF hood latch like the stock one. Your prices are very reasonable as well. I'm interested in all the stock stuff in CF when you get to the "production" stage
