Newbie here. I give up. On my stock 85 GS, what's the little bucket under the washer fluid bucket for?
It says something like "sub zero" and has a lash attached to the cap. Supposed to put 10% antifreeze in there. Is this another carburetion thing?

It injects the fluid into the rotor housings to increase compression in a cold start condition.

Nice.
I know it wouldn't be smog-correct, but I wonder if it might be better to fill that thing with a low temp oil instead of water? Would give compression and lube, I would think...
And how cold does it have to be for that thing to kick in? Sub Zero?

its called a sub zero starting assist. that is the resivour. what it does is when its below freeezing, the sub zero starting assist will inject a shot of that mixture into the carb. it help to de-ice thc carb and the internals. you are supposed to use 90%water and 10% antifreeze. most guys remove them. i don't because i like originality. i've never seen one work though.

Typically they don't even work after all these years. They are supposed to kick in at below 0 F.

Kentetsu, you're right, that does sound like one thing (at least) that can go.

I like your dual electric fan setup. How much for the parts for that? Pretty easy job? I like to rev it high (otherwise, why have a rotary?) and a fan bolted to the front of the engine is the definition of increasing drag per rev!

Those fans are from a 1st gen MR2. I paid something like 15 bucks for them at the local pick N pull. After stripping and new paint, they don't look too bad. I actually only run one of them (for a year and a half now) and have had no issues. Mounting on the stock radiator takes like five minutes. Run a search for MR2 fan and you will find a lot of threads on this install. I know I've posted the instructions and some pictures several times over the years on this, so its out there somewhere. I highly recommend this upgrade/mod.

+1 on the Sub-Zero removal. Mine's never worked since I got the car, so I just yanked that thing outta there and cleaned up the engine bay a tiny bit. 1 hour's worth of work is all you need.

just take it out! in cold whether pump the throttle a few times, that's what i do in cold wheather.

I don't think my car has ever gotten cold enough for it to be needed...I just leave it there for originality, as well.
