Turnkey Engine w/ 250 hp (is this worth it?)

Well there is this place I recently found called "Fast Freddy's" that spacialize in rotaries. I was planning on doing my project myself but after talking to them I might have them take care of everything.

I told them that I was looking for around 300hp w/ maybe a turbo setup and some porting on a 13b and that my goal was to hit the 12's

They told me that they could sell me a turnkey 13b with side draft webbers and a street port that would put out 250 hp. It was a brand new engine that comes with a 1 year warrantee. The engine and install would cost 4500-4800.

They said that I should also go with a dual friction clutch, aluminum flywheel and 4.30 (.38 .44) or 4.88 gears.

and a racing beat exhaust with headers.

All that they said would get me to the point I want to be at. Now my question is, Is it worht it? For every thing they quoted me at $5-6000. Or would it just be wiser to keep the project my project?

WAY to expensive... go buy a turbo 2 j-spec motor rebuild it YOUR SELF get a t03-to4 turbo a chipped ECU some larger injectors fuel pump fuel pressure reg FMIC and a boost controller... That will get you farther then you ever imagined... and for ALLOT less $$$… The only way you would pull that kind of power is if you did a bridge port and your gas mileage would cease to exist…

I know that with a weber side draft set-up with stock ports and the rb race exhaust set-up, you can come very close to 200 hp (flywheel). Even with a healthy streetport I am not sure if you can make 250hp unless thay have some neat tricks up their sleeves.

Ive been pricing out the whole T2 swap just trying to get an idea of how much it might cost to get one in and running basically "stock" so I could mod it later after I work out all the bugs. Anyway, Im at $3,491 on my Excel spredsheet for: engine, tranny, lightweight steel flywheel, Clutch Masters clutch kit, complete fuel system (VERY similar to DF), BOV, and downpipe. I still need a lot, Im not sure it actually would work out to be cheaper because I have yet to add the fuel computer...So unless you did it carb, you might go over that 6K number. Just my opinion though .

You got a $800 long block... $150 for a gasket set... $250 for apex seals... $30 for front and rear main seal... $500 for clutch... screw the flywheel UP THE BOOST!!!... $150 for engine balancing... $1000 for EMS... $100 for stock direct fire ignition... $150 in pipeing... $100 Volvo inter cooler... $100 for tranny... $400 for driveline... $350 for fuel pump and fuel pressure reg... $500 complete exaughst system... add it all up and I have 4580… everything but traction… and that’s with a full ems you could cut 1k right there and use a normal ecu… you would be all setup and ready to run how ever much boost the stock turbo will put out and that’s going to put out WAY more power then 250 hp… I forgot the injectors and bov… I am shure I forgott some other things... Thats prices most everyone should be able to get ahold of stuff fo...

You got a $800 long block...
Wheres that? The superior 89-92 13BT long block engine is $1100 at FC3S.org.
$100 for tranny...
Once again, where? The 13BT tranny is $350 at FC3S.org.
$150 for a gasket set... $250 for apex seals...
Again where?
$500 for clutch... screw the flywheel UP THE BOOST!!!...
What kinda clutch are you thinking of here? Also, why go through the effort of rebuilding the engine and then skip something like the flywheel?
$1000 for EMS...
Which one?
$350 for fuel pump and fuel pressure reg
What about tank prep? New lines? Filter?

Im not trying to prove you wrong, its just that Im planning this swap, and if I can get it cheaper, then please let me know where . Thanks.

Hey man no problem... I was talking about the series 4 block... Here is a tip... call up to some importers in Vancouver... generally they will sell them pretty cheap... I have gotten quotes from them for $700 before...

Tranny... little nickel... buynsell... friends... maybe even a bone yard... for a good turbo tranny... if you have to you can use a 12a tranny... I got a 76 j spec 13b with a down draft deloro setup and a ribbed tranny for $200... deals are out there... have to jump on them though...

Clutch... I know a guy $500 Centerforce stage 4 clutches... You cannot resurface a aftermarket flywheel…

Gasket set and apex seals... i know the apex seals are $250 from atkins... There gasketsets for MY MOTOR are $110... last time I checked I THOUGHT $150 for a series 4 turbo motor but I haven’t priced them out in a while...

Ems... michrotec or **** I forgot the name of this place out of Calgary in CA there supposed to put out some good ems's...

Tank prep??? new lines??? Never thought about it...

IF you REALLY want to do a cheap setup let me know how much $$$ you have to play with and I will start looking for some buys... Its been my exp it is cheaper to run a older 4 port block swap out the stationary gears, rotors and flywheel... then run a newer efi system... might also want to run a distributor setup with a fuel controller... It will cost less if you start collecting now… parts are NEVER out there when you need em…

The thing that makes me laugh is ALLOT of shops no matter what car your talking about claim numbers they can NEVER produce... I have a firend on line that got talked into a NA setup on his lude they said would make 325hp... Setups included 11:1 comp ecu header and cams... and some other stuff I forgott about... I hate it when theese people talk people into spending WAY too much $$$ for not alot in return...

i **** on hondas , i totaly agree with you 250 N/A hp is almost impossible unless you go with a p-port!

we had a 13b p-port full drag race car and it only made 205 rwhp!!! thats after tuning it on the chassis dyno for 3 hours but, that car weighed 1,600 pounds = 11:40 quarter mile times ...

You need to work on that. We have an old school RX-3 here with P-Port making 262 to the wheels. 15 more than when first broken in. That was over 200 passes ago. It runs with no alternator, and an electric water pump too. GeForce tranny.

It is now being refreshed for the upcoming season, this time running alcohol and a Haltec E6K. Should be very interesting this coming year.

that sounds like a bad RX3!! any ET's?? keep in mind we built the RX7 in 1997 , with a very limited budget!! the car had a stock rear with lots of gear ,stock tranny, race clutch ,51 weber IDA carb and mainly stock SE internals...that car is getting upgrades slowly, ( haltech f9, chevy 12 bolt, jerico,) but the owner needs more $$$$!!!
p/s what rear end is in the RX3?? those cars hook!!!(traction) my friend Rene has a RX3 turbo car, running a 8" slick he gets 1.35 60 foot times!!!

The car still has the FULL interior AND a 10 point cage. I have seen it run consistent 11.15's, all day long and win the Bracket Race competitions too.
Since it has no weight reduction, My guess is about 2300 lbs right now, maybe a little less. The rear end is a Ford.

BTW, the car is street-legal. Although with the newer Ge-Force, he doesn't drive on the street anymore.

Hey 680RWHP12A. where are you located at. I could come down and take a look pretty much any time. BTW, did you mean you are selling some turbo cars or you want me to look at the kind of work you could do for me? Either way, I AM DOWN for a streeteble 300hp turbo 1st gen!!!
Just tell me when and where and ill be there! Also, If you want to you can e-mail me at bustadouglass@hotmail.com. Thanks alot buddy!!!

One more thing. What kind of times (1/4) would I be looking at in your opinion with 300hp? my goal is for it to run easy 12's, or to put it another way, to kill a vette enough to shatter his ego!

680rwhp12a, 205 for a p-port 13b, that's not right. My neighbor used to be part of a team that ran an rx-7. They had ~290fwhp out of a 12a p-port, I'm almost positive it was with a weber 48 carb. I'll have to talk to him more about they setup they were running though, I don't know much about it at all.
