This problem happens to me all the time due to corroded battery cables. If you still have the original battery cables, I recommend replacing them. Otherwise, mess with the terminals or battery connection some more until it is able to turn over.

Baking soda in water works well, too; neutralizes the galvanic action & acids, and works as a mild abrasive.

hear one click? Solenoid, the one on the starter.

What happened is that the brushes get worn. So you take out the starter and test it. It works fine!! What happened is that those worn brushes moved to make contact from all the activity of taking out the starter.

The fix is to >>> replace the starter <<<

The starter can be tested in place to eliminate this "mystery"

one way is to bang the starter with a mallet, if it is worn brushes, they should move to make contact....

Also you can test the continuity, see if there is juice going to the starter.

Part stores like NAPA Auto Zone Advance Auto can test the starter for you.

You guys are getting side tracked. If this issue did not start until he replaced the battery and cable ends, then it is most likely due to those changes. Lack of juice reaching the starter...

one thing i would chk is if the spade connector is still pluged on the starte, you should be able to see from inside the engine bay!

If that wire was not hooked up, there would be no click. The click is the sound of the solenoid engaging. The problem is, there is not enough juice making it through the battery cable to actually kick the starter over.

Been there myself, and the symptoms he's describing are a dead match. Especially since he's recently been messing with the cables. It just makes sense.

This is a pretty bold statement to make here since there are multiple causes for this condition.

I agree with Kentetsu.

The correct procedure here is to recheck the tightness of the terminal ends at the battery. If that is corrected and the issue still exists then I would make sure that the replacement battery that was just installed is in good working order. Then If it still just clicks go on to checking the connection at the starter, etc.....

So that's why we bang on the starter. I always bang on it when I think the starter is bad but I didn't know why. I thought it was just the general rule of "If it doesn't work bang the **** out of it."

Double and triple check the connection at the starter. If that isn't the cause, then you have been the victim of an outrageous coincidence (which does sometimes happen). Best of luck and Merry Christmas.
