I don't have pictures right now, but I just mounted my S4 turbo and manifold along with my new carb/intake and everything just barely fits (without putting a flange between the S4 manifold and 12a engine).
Should I use the flange/spacer anyways?
Do you use a gasket between the flange+manifold?
Are longer engine studs required?
Or is there something I can put between the two to insulate the intake from the heat of the turbo?
Part of the turbo is actually touching the intake. I'll try to get pics soon.

its ok if their close together.
if everything fits your good to go.

i would go ahead and put a spacer in there anyway. because i wouldnt take the chance of harming anything, and you can try and keep some of the heat away from intake manifold.

Spacing it out a little is the way to go. I wound up spacing mine out 1 1/8". I used a gasket between the block and spacer. Then another between the spacer and turbo manifold. Been that way for a year and a half. No leaks so far. I fabbed an aluminum heat shield that sits snuggly between.

Did you use a 12a gasket and then a 13b gasket? Or both 13b?

Also did you have to use longer engine studs with the spacer? I have a flange to use as the spacer I'm just not sure how most people do it.

I'm gonna try it again but with gaskets this time, that should give me at least 6mm of clearance between the turbo and intake. Maybe thats enough to get a heat shield in there.

I went to my local nut and bolt store, and just told them I needed 4 studs 1 1/4" longer than the stock ones. As far as the gaskets, I used two 12A gaskets. I just slotted the holes on the 13B turbo manifold. The spacer I am using is an experimental billet aluminum piece with steel sleeves. It has held up well for almost two years. No exhaust leaks.
