Turbo II Transmission into a 1st gen...???

I am putting my TurboII transmission *back* into my 1st gen so I already have a custom driveshaft. The last time it was installed in the car the shifter doesn't sit right so I just kept the plastic center piece off being it hit in 2nd and 4th. There was a write up / thread somewhere showing how to swap the tails so the TurboII transmission sits properly in a 1st gen but I can't seem to find it...? I remember one of the pins has to be drilled....?? And that's about it. Is it a hard task swapping tails...??? Thanks.

Am subscribing to this thread as I'd like to know as well. Mind measuring your driveshaft. This is on a 12a, correct?

Cool video. Thanks Jay. Ill be giving this a shot on Monday. I'm sure it'll make even more sense once I start actually doing it. I'll post back with results.

I thought the TII tranny was only off an inch than a stock FB tranny...not ~4 inches...on the shifter location that is. If that's so, this mod will not work.

It's only about a inch, I just cut my tunnel and haven't looked back since.

Nothing hits works great and its the easiest way to get it in there.

I had it that way for about 5 years. It doesn't hit but the crunched up rubber boot in 2nd, 4th and R I never liked as well as the stretched boot in 1st, 3rd and 5th. My interior is a 9.5 out of 10and my OCD just wont allow such atrocities. I went back to a 12A transmission when I replaced the motor some time back to try out the lower gearing but I'm on my 3rd one in the past two years with the 100 shot of nitrous and Mickey Thompsen drag radials. I fear the TurboII transmission will make the rearend the weakest link next so Im going to have to learn to drive a little easier. Besides the fact I'm all out of 12A transmissions.

Search for rex4life swap thread, I think he has a detailed write up or the shifter mod.

I did it on mine, drilled the hole 3mm forward of the old hole and hacked off the end of the shift rod. then you just cut down the tube it goes through and rtv one end really good, then assemble trans. shifts great and fits perfect. I cut the chassis on my last setup and i always felt it was kinda ghetto, modding the trans is easy and doesnt take too long. heres a finished picture, let me know if you want/need more info

Nitro, the mods were done to the TII shifter rod and sleeve but you used the housing from the FB tranny, correct?

This isn't working for me...?? The tail housing will not come off and I don't want to ruin my transmission.

I have a 2nd gen NA transmission that I want to use and a blown 12A transmission that I want to use the shifter housing from to get the shifter in the right location.

The main tail housing does not want to come off of the 2nd Gen transmission....?? It's lifting off from the main body about 2 inches and that's it.

The 12a tail housing came right off. I'm wondering do I even need to remove the tail housing from the 2nd gen transmission like Jay did in his video..?? Can't I just swap shifter housings...??

Edit: Scratch that... I think Ive got it. The 12A tail housing (not shifter housing) fits right onto the 2nd gen transmission. I'll report back if it actually works in the car.

You might want to temporarily remove the reverse light switch. I recall I had to do that on two of these swaps in recent memory. Makes the tail housing go on easier.

Yea it made it a little harder cause it hit the exhaust but I got it in by angeling it a little.

I friggin forgot to put this back.

Upon further inspection of the blown 12A transmission it's a channel that puts gear oil into where the driveshaft spins. Son of a gun. I'm going to be a pro at putting in / taking out transmissions by the end of the day.

Sorry Jeff, I thought you meant getting the transmission back in the car. I typed that right after I had just finished bench pressing the thing back in. The rev sensor was right in the darn way making it a bit of a pita and angeling it laying on my back was somewhat difficult.

Turns out Im going to have to drop the transmission again anyways regardless of forgetting the channel. My driveshaft had some play entering the tail, which leaked gear oil, which caused me to run dry, which I'd assume eventually caused its end. Same tail, same problem. Good thing I do have another blown 12A trans.

Anyone know offhand what the spacer size is for a S4TII in a FB, using the FB trans mount? I believe it was 3/4in, but I lost the original I made and cant find this measurement.
