tune-up and air filter
tune-up and air filter
Hi people, brand new here so treat me like a newbie allright! lol! No joke, I'm looking foward to buy a 85 se and I want to do a full tune-up to see if everything is allright. My question is: what exacly is done during a tune-up? Maybe I can do it by myself... As you've all guess, I'm not a specialist in rotary but I WANT to learn and I think this is the best way. Also, I need a new air filter. So there's that that big old square box... Can I replace all that with a K&N kone air filter? Is it the best choice? I think both filters (kone and square) are about the same price, am I right? Sorry for tose dumb question but I will learn alot that way.
Last question: My brake fluide is leaking from those little tube, driver side, that goes from the front to the end of the car. Since I'm french, I don't know how you guys call those, so help me please, so I can search for them. Any site with some picture and the description of the picture would be very helpfull, so I can learn all the parts in english.

Hey fellow Canuck! I've got two K&N filters (for the stock box) sitting in my basement for an SE (I replaced mine with the Bonez intake soon after purchasing the filter). If you are interested, just let me know. To be honest, I didn't see a huge improvement changing to the Bonez system over the K&N. Of course I had to convince myself I felt a difference to justify the purchase.
Thanks for all... but Donna, I know this url is very helpfull, but i've already read it and it didn't really answer my questions... Maybe I missed something??
Defprun, your french is very good... well... uhm... yeah it's good!!
T-Rav, How much are you asking for one of these? And were do you live?
And please, can somebody answer my question even if they're stupid?
what exacly is done during a tune-up?
Can the stock box be replace with a K&N kone air filter? Is it the best choice?
The name of those tube under the car with brake fluid in it? (maybe brake lines???)
thanks

I love that song

*Singing* I took lyzer to the dance, and faith but she could travel, every step that she did take, was half a mile 'o gravel *End Singing*
Those filters are $124 Canuck Bucks new and, if properly oiled, never wear out.
I bought one offa guy in Winterpeg for $30 US and thought that was a bargain. $10 is quite low.

I know I can I adjust the air-fuel ratio with the screw on the engine. But can I do it by myself? How do I know when the ratio is good?
thanks for your help

One of the filters got layed claim to tonight by FJ. $50.00 Canadian and I put it in the mail tomorrow. One left if you want it. Both in excellent condition. Send me a PM if interested.
BTW seb K&N makes a square filter (which I presume is what the other Canucks are offering a supply of) that drops right into your airbox - no need for a cone type & custom plumbing.
Well, for me a tuneup starts with new plugs (and maybe wires), distributor cap, fuel filter, air filter, whatever else I think of. While under the hood, check fluids like brake and clutch for top up, and drain any black ugly hydraulic fluid. Put the new plugs in with some anti-sieze goop. Never bother to re-use plugs, unless they're really expensive. Be sure to get the right plugs, as some bimbo auto shops will try to sell you plugs whose points stick up so far as to clip the apex seals! Oh woe!
Look in the carb throats and eyeball their operation to see the butterflys work, and that the accelerator pump squirts gas. If the carb looks ugly and/or operates poorly, run some Berrymans B-12 thru (using a drop cloth to protect all the painted surfaces). Check the timing. Check the compression (use an ordinary comp gauge with the shraeder valve removed from the tip that goes in the plug hole).
Anything else?

But yeah, besides that you're right on... Plugs, wires, filter, oil and coolant change, fuel and oil filters...
Also maybe want to run some Canadian Tire "Formula 1 Synthetic Fuel Treatment" (the one in the long skinny metal bottle) to clean your fuel injectors... check the brakes, and suspension, plus all the bushings... lube all the joints... get the steering adjusted to take out the slop (do a search for that one),
Take the car to Krown or RustCheck, or somthing along those lines so she won't rust up on ya...
Check the fuel lines, brakes lines etc... And don't foget all the vaccum hoses in the engine bay... Maybe a new battery and set of battery cables too (PM me if you need help with that one)...
Oh yeah, Canadian Tire Formula 1 Oil filters are a good deal, especially when on sale... Plugs are probably cheapest and easiest to get from a Mazda Dealer...
Oh yeah, a good MMO treatment BEFORE you change the plugs is probably a VERY good idea (do a search for that too)...
Feel free to PM or e-mail me if you need any other help...
And je parle un tres petit peu de francais aussi...
Lol...
