trying to tune to start

Car will only start/run when I am pumping the gas so that the accelerator pump sprays in. It wont run at idle and therefore dies as soon as I stop revving it. It will also run if I srapy starter fluid continually into the carb.

Whats that sound like to you guys?

Fule spressure is 6 psi, compression is perfect, it will run smooth on starter fluid so ignition is ruled out,

basically what do I need to adjust?

Have you set your float heights and base idle mixture?

Set the floats one at a time with the pump on and engine off. Remove the brass plug in the side of each floatbowl near the top. Fuel should be weeping out slowly on level ground if adjusted correctly. If not loosen the large screw at the top of the bowl and turn the nut under it clockwise to lower float height and counterclockwise to raise it. You will need to chase the nut with the screw to keep from spraying everything with fuel durring adjustment.

Idle mixture adjustment screws usually work well at 2 to 2-1/4 turns out from fully closed. The little mixture screws are on the sides of the primary metering block near the bottom. Rotate these screws clockwise until they stop. Count the number of rotations and remember so you can compare or put it back if you want. Rotate the screws 2 to 2 1/4 turns counterclockwise.

Which Holley do you have? Has it been modified at all?

Good Luck!!

Turn your idle speed up so its high enough to keep the engine running, then check your timing. After that, set idle mixture and see if you can get the idle speed back down to spec. Sorry, but I have no experience with Holley carbs...
