troubleshooting - second opinions

i made a post before about how after i took my air pump off my car sounded weird - well i fixed the air pump and put it back on and it still sounds weird so it had nothing to do with the air pump. it backfires when idling sometimes and the spark plugs are carbon fouled so im pretty sure its running to rich. however, i dont think its any of the adjusting screws because it happened suddenly so i think something broke. i dont have as much experience as alot of you but my guess is that the carb floats broke, which would let excessive fuel into the float bowl and explain the rich mixture. I was just wondering what u guys thought - do u think i might be right, any other thoughts as to what might be wrong? thanks.
