Trouble starting flooded engine. Any hints?
Trouble starting flooded engine. Any hints?
My car was having trouble starting and eventually wouldn't start at all and I determined that the problem was the fuel pump. Now I'm getting gas but the engine is flooded. I've tried this procedure 3 times, but it hasn't worked.
( BTW: It's an 85 GSL-SE)
Removed spark plugs.
Disabled fuel pump and then cranked engine to get any gas out.
Put some motor oil in spark plug holes (about a tablespoon) (tried ATF the first time)
Put dry spark plugs in and try to start.
The engine turns over very easily, like there is no compression, but doesn't start. Spark plugs are wet afterwards.
I have spark and fuel, but I guess, no compression. I can't imagine that my seals decided to go bad exactly the same time as the fuel pump.
Any hints or suggestions?

Put the rear plugs in the housing, and turn the main pully by hand. You should hear 3 wooshes. If you dont, a seal is gone. Repeat with the rear, put plugs in front, wait for 3 wooshes. That is how you test for broken apex/side seals.
Clean the spark plugs real good and make sure they are not dirty or covered in grime. Spin the engine for about 2 seconds, then leave the plugs out. Let the car sit for about 15 minutes and spin it for 2 seconds again. Put the plugs back in (no oil/seafoam/etc), put the fuse for the FP back in, and turn her over. Good luck, this is how I unflooded mine plenty of times.

And, if all else fails, push starting can be used as a last ditch effort for a standard shift car.
My buddy flooded his 12a so bad, that after talking him through the unflood steps for a month, I went to his house, and tied a chain on the front. 100 yards later, it was running for the first time in almost a month.

to deflood i usally take the spark plugs out and dissconect the coils+fuel pump then crank till the mist stops comin out..
as stated above either pull start or try jump starting for added amps..

Definatly check for compression. I flood clear my GSL-SE almost everyday (leaky injectors), when you park it, try pulling your engine fuse, that corrected the problem for me untill I can pay to get my injectors cleaned/rebuilt. If you can't get it to start once you turn it over with the plugs out, and no fuel pump, make sure your getting proper ignition.

I had an 86 with a 13B engine, and when it flooded, it sounded like it spun a lot faster when trying to start. It's normal for it to sound like this. The recomendation to have a jump vehicle is also a great idea. When mine flooded, the stock battery just didn't quite have the umphhh to get it going again. The added amperage from a second batt will make a big help. New spark plugs are also a great idea! Good luck!
