transmission problem or clutch?

My tranny just started actin funny.. I can baerly move the stick when the car is in neutral.. As in it won't go left or right with the clutch in our out very easily and then I sorta have to force it into gear... Whats the deal with that? Is my tranny shot if so where do I get the stuff to rebuild it and how hard is it?

Hmm. i just replaced both a couple months ago.. The main problem isn't going into gear its that I can baerly move the shifter when it is in neutral clutch or no clutch you should be able to wiggle it left and right easily...

Ah yes makes sense.. I'll try that tomorrow..

While on the subject though how much does it cost to rebuild a tranny (parts only) and where can I get the parts.. And how difficult is it? I think I may rebuild it soon anyways the tranny isn't very smooth compared to my 82 and it will grind a gear every now again on quick shifts so thats the synchro's going out..

Sounds like the shifter is binding.
I'd take it out and have a look at it, as well as the little bushing that goes into the cup on the shifting rod.
When you get that sorted, fill the transmission with Amsoil 75W-90 synthetic gear oil and see if it doesn't smooth out the synchros as well as quiet the tranny overall.

Yeah, the only trannys I've had go bad screamed a lot in 1, 2 and 3 and were quiet in 4 (direct drive), Suggesting that the layshaft bearings went bad. I replaced with a rebuilt I got for $200 from a guy who rolled his 7 a few thousand miles after a transmission rebuild, and the other was a gift (free). Both were good. I sold the old trannys for $25 to guys who wanted to have a nice clean indoor winter project of putting in new bearings. I never rebuilt a 7 transmsn myself, but I suppose it's a typical constant-mesh like my old 62 Alfa, so you need snap ring pliers and a lot of patience and a way to sort out all the little parts.

And put good gear lube in the poor thing (I'm using Redline MTF) and don't go snap-shifting to 2nd except that one time a year when you just gotta get by a car. It helps making your shifts smoother if you useta drive a non-syncro tractor on the farm.

You also need a really big and long socket to get one staked nut off of the Main shaft.

It's something like 43MM wide by 18 Inches in Depth.

I got most of the parts for mine from Drivetrain.com.

But, a couple of the bearings in the kit were wrong, or just not included, and I had to get those directly from a Mazda dealer. Had to get a new shaft nut from the dealer as well.

Other than that, it wasnt too bad, but with all the mistakes I made, I can get the Transmission in and out of my car in about half and hour now.

Thanks guys.. I think though the ball just needed some grease.. and after thinking about it this all coicidentally happened after I drove through some rather large puddles and so i think it washed away some of the grease as when I pulled it out the thing was dry as can be.. All is better now that its greased up, and im going to put new fluid in it to see if that helps the grinding gears any.
