transmission id

I am trying to determine how to identify the transmission in my 84 rx se.
(I had an 84 se for many years and could easily shift into 5th gear around 50 mph.
My current se I need to be going at least 55 - 60 mph to shift into 5th otherwise the engine will lug.
Upon reviewing the shop manual I noticed that the only difference between an se transmission and the other rx's is 5th gear on the se is a little lower numerically.
Based on that, I wonder if someone changed the transmission in my car to a non se transmission.
Are the SE trans and non se trans identical except for 5th gear?
Does anyone know how to determine what trans is in my car?
I did a search in this forum but did not find information on this topic.
Thanks for any help and have a great holiday!!

In 84-85 their was a vent cast on the right side of the bellhousing. But as far as telling if it is a Se trans? If your motor is lugging at that speed then there is a running problem.

That sounds like the SE transmission. Numerically lower = less RPM for a given speed.

So, either your old SE had a 12A transmission, or your current car is down on power compared to the old one.
