Question Transmission Help --( ((><)) )-->

I plan to swap out my 83 GSL tranny in the coming week since it decided to do a mission impossible and self destruct. I was wondering if you guys could give me some pointers to make the job easier as I have never changed out a tranny. What fluid do I use to flush out a tranny that has been sitting out for a couple of years?

Just use some cheap gear oil of the proper density (see manual) to flush it out, then after you flush it once or twice, fill it with a good synthetic. Redline, Royal Purple, etc. It will be better in the long run.

As for swapping it out, its not that bad. Its not any harder than it looks, not special tools, etc. Follow the manual. Just get the car up on jack stands, get the heat shields outta the way, drop the driveline, unhook the trannywires and appropriate clutch components, support the engine, unbolt the tranny and lower it down out on a floor jack. Installation is the reverse of removal.

EDIT: You could think about changing the throwout bearing and pilot bearings while youre in there too. If you have deep pockets a new clutch wouldnt hurt either :p

Only thing I would add is drain the trans before you drop it or youll have a mess on your hands.

Heh, guess I shouldve added that. I guess you could flush it while its out of the car, but install it empty and do the final fill after its installed.

And on your head, the garage floor, your arms and many other places you don't want 90 weight gear oil.. LOL
